Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This may have come up before ... but, we started something tonight that I think is going to be very cool. We put Thomas (10) in Seton this year as he wants to get ready for going to Rick's high school ... one of the subjects in the curriculum is Art for Young Catholics. Because Thomas' schedule is pretty chock-a-block, we thought we'd do this as a family and started tonight. It was so fun to go thru the "first week" lesson and discuss it as a family ... talk about the different styles of art and the different symbolism. The 5th grade one that we have focuses on the 15 mysteries of the Rosary (they haven't finished the revised that will cover the Luminous) and then in the Spring, we'll cover icons and Eastern Catholic art.

This is a great, easy way to get art history ... we will research some of the artists more and some will just view and then move on. The pictures in the text are beautiful and in this first chapter on the Annunciation, included one that I'd never seen before by Burne-Jones and now want a print of (dh and I got married on the Annunciation and so have a growing collection of these pictures).

Anyone else done this?

Yes! I have all the seton art books and love them. We did the art 5 a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. The icon study is fascinating!

What book does Seton use for the icon study? I have never seen that painting of the Annunciation, either, Mary! It is lovely!

Jennifer, because they haven't updated the Art5 to include the Luminous Mysteries, they put the icon study as the 4th quarter in that book.

I just am so impressed by the art work and the coverage. It was really fun doing this as a family last night so dh could participate and explain things too.

Thanks for this information. I didn't realize that Seton had art history books. After looking on their web site, it looks to me that Art 5, Art 7, and the new Art Through Faith (grade 8) are the only art history books. The others are "how to" books. Is this right? Any one have comments on the other (art history) books? They all look interesting. Any other suggestions on (easy) ways to use them for art history/appreciation? Can older kids (8th grade) use them independently? You have definitely sparked my interest!

Yes, that's correct, those are the only art apprecation books. I love Art one for decorating our family altar and my oldest daughter has found Art 4&6 very helpful for drawing (she worked through them one after another rather then stick to the recommended grade level).

I found that the Art 5 and Art Through Faith worked very well for art apprecation (my older child, who's in grade six reads them by herself all the time - a grade eight child should have no problem)

I prefer to use Art 7 for bibical/spiritual study rather then formal art appreciation but that's a personal preferance (most of the book uses the artist's own commentary and it was a work of devotion for him).

Art 8 is beautiful, it's well worth buying the hard cover.

Easy ways to use them other then just assigning so much reading each week.

Art 5 works well along with CHC's rosary project (or another rosary study). Going over the relevant chapter (or with younger children just looking at the pictures) really enriches the study of the mysteries.

Art through Faith is a good addition to history studies (again I normally just show and talk about the picture with younger children).

As I stated I normally use Art 7 with our bibical studies (bible history).

joining the convo to say I got Art 7 by mistake a couple of months ago -- it wasn't what I meant to order. But am I ever so glad I did! It's a great art curriculum, I'm actually thinking of ditching our Artistic Pursuits plan and going with this one. Artistic Pursuits is great, but Seton's Art curriculum is more my style. After we finish the AP book we're on, we're switching.

This was the print on the cover of Michelle's planners last year

I have all the art for young catholic books.

We are currently doing Art with a Purpose (which I will give rave reviews for btw!)

The art 1 and 2 books are how to draw whatever stuff, but they are very well laid out. We really liked that the book explains how to draw several things, then gives a lesson on putting them all together on one activities. The style is similiar tot he step by step drawing method of Draw Write Now series (which I also have and like!)

Art 3 is actually nothing but crafts! From basic bookmarker type stuff to reliefs and sacrd heart statues. Very fun.

Art 4 is a more in depth how to draw book.

Art 5 is a lovely art appreciation book (get the Icon supplimentary books for the end of it - they are fascinating and highly enjoyable)

Art 6 is a more traditional how to draw book, with some history and discussion of placement, method, and style. Boys love the medieval section.

Art 7 and 8 are lovely art history books.

I'm not an "artsy" kind of mom by nature. But I will say somethign I've always loved about Seton is the amazing and beautiful art work in all their Seton press materials. For years, I've cut out the front and back covers of workbooks we'd be using and saved them for the art pictures and crafts.

Thanks for the more detailed info. It's really helpful! I'm just deciding whether to buy one (which one?) or all three of these. I have an 8 year old who is quite interested in icons. May I ask what books are used as the icon supplementary books? Also, I have a 13 year old who will be doing GABT and thinking of using Art 7 or 8 to complement that.
God bless,
Dana
