Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm thinking about purchasing Mommy, It's a Renoir for my 1st grader. Is this a good, fun, art program that is not to time consuming?

Mommy, It's a Renoir is an art appreciation program. I have never used it according to the instructions. When I do use it I just display one picture at a time and we do a picture study on it. We might get a book on the artist and their paintings out from the library.

If you are looking for some projects to do, Mary Ann Kohl books are good, you should be able to get her books from the library to try. The library is a good place to find excellent books with easy projects to do.

I have used the Artistic Pursuits program, thats fun and simple. http://www.artisticpursuits.com/

I second Artistic Pursuits! The first book would fit well with your RC History Volume 1, if you've decided to go that route.
The Mommy, It's a Renoir is great, but I never seem to get to it. We like the typical picture study, kind of like Sharyn described above.

God bless,
Christine

We used this last year as part of the Mother of Divine Grace curriculum. I thought it was boring, so we abandoned it a few weeks in. Maybe we will revisit it in the manner the previous posters have used it.

I have used it with my dc...

They liked the pocket folders and matching the pictures, but it was not something they picked off the shelves to do on their own. And once they mastered a certain level, they were pretty done with it and didn't want to do it again later.

I found it was fun but not a long term player for my dc. We went on to Artistic Pursuits for hands on learning, and plain old picture study to learn about different artists.

I wanted to try the program, and I'm glad I did. It's a sweet and gentle intro to art... it's just not something that is going to grow much with my kids.

I ditto everything else said here. We originally used it as part of MODG as instructed but ended up modifying it to make it more hands on and interesting.

Mommy, It's a Renoir is limited in scope to really just sorting/identifying pictures. I have found that my children get a lot more out of a six to ten week unit of focused study on one artist and their works. We use the basic picture-study method of focusing on one picture a week, viewing it, narrating it, and then we put it out to be looked at throughout the week. To this we add a picture biography (I had to make one up from the Internet for Fra Angelico) or two and also one or two hands-on related projects, often from Mary Ann Kohl's book Discovering Great Artists. We also add a reduced (tiny!) copy of a representative work to our Book of the Centuries. This has worked really well for us so far.

I do much the same as Caroline. I wanted to mention a resource that is helpful for use with Discovering Great Artists. There is an online art supplement that is a great addition to the use of this book.
