Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I will start this topic off with a wonderful book.

SEBASTIAN: A BOOK ABOUT BACH by Jeanette Winter

The illustrations are great, a bit unique. My kids loved it.

After reading a few bios, we know a bit of his story was simplified........but it still makes for a nice book.

Do you have any picture books about composers to share? or any about opera? orchestras?
Peter and the Wolf????

These kind of picture books are nice when you have only 10 and unders........you can still expose them to classical music and use these books to share about the composers life....until they get older and you can revisit the composer with a chapter book bio.

Some people think they have to wait to do this when their kids are older.......but not with all of the great picture books that abound. See what you library has to offer!

Also........this does not have to be detailed.....just some music and a book. Nor does it have to be frequent......once or a few times a year is still exposure. Sometimes it is fun to borrow the same book a couple of times a year just to remind the kids and help them make more of a relationship with the composer.

Happy listening! Happy reading!

Great topic, Chari! Does anyone have suggestions for picture, living books about Vivaldi or Shubert?

Love,

Well, of course it's OOP, but A Little Schubert is the cutest PB on any composer.

We are just about to finish up our study on Handel and we read a great story called:

Handel and the Famous Sword Swallower of Halle
by Bryna Stevens

The illustrations are very pretty......there is one part that talks about the boy who swallowed the knife.......for sensitive kids you may want to rephrase it

Chopin is next........my kids are SO excited! They have been begging to study him for years!

Introducing Vivaldi by Roland Vernon

The Life and Times of Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (Masters of Music)
by Jim Whiting

I found both of these on Amazon. Our library did not seem to have any juvenile books on Vivaldi

Look up this: franz schubert juvenile on amazon.....there are 13 choices........maybe your library might have them

God bless,

All the Opal Wheeler books on composers are just wonderful (and of course, OOP). These are books you pass down to your grandchildren. Off the top of my head, there are books on Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Hayden, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Stephen Foster..and more. Black and white sillouhette drawings, largish well-spaced print-font making for easy reading (though the words aren't babyish). My mother read these to me as a child and I remembered them. They make great read-alouds, too!

We love these books, too, Kelly! I guess my kids will have similar memories to you.....as THEIR mother reads them aloud to them!      They are rather young than some bios.......but they are fun and a quick read! They all have bits and peices of the composers music throughout the book for your sightreaders!

We are awaiting one on Chopin, written by her.......they have been BEGGING for Chopin!

At least two Opal Wheeler books, Bach and Mozart, are back in print. The Bookpeddler sells them online. I think it is bookpeddler.com

bumping up this old thread........wow...I started it a.long.time.ago!

I am doing Mozart with my youngers who were either babies or not born yet the last time I did it.

A nice thing about that: there are newer books around now!

Mozart: scenes from the Childhood of the Great Composer by Catherine Brighton

This is told from his sister's POV....it is sweet.....the illustartions are wonderful........it sort of ended abruptly......but totally worth reading

Play, Mozart, Play!

What a surprise to find a book about Mozart for the very young! sweet, young...but even my 11yo and 7yo boys did not mind it

anyone got anything else to add to this thread, lately?
