Donna, I do not recall the lyrics, so that would make the difference for me. I would not want my kids playing the tune to something that would have the audience singing bad lyrics in their head.
However, I *think* I remember the tune, and it would sound really cool!
I suppose I'd start by looking up the lyrics?

ok, the lyrics are violent, but no bad words, languages, images, and no s*x references.
there are different artists who have covered it, too.
I think I would be leaning towards stating my concern, but allowing my child to play it.?

I don't know the song so I would probably follow Lisa's suggestion. But we like the rock/orchestra combo. Like Transiberian Orchestra.

When I am unsure about what to do about something, I decide...
What's the worse thing that could happen...ie in your case, what's the worse thing that could happen if you state your concern?
If what you think that worse thing is, is it something you can live with, then state your concern.
Did that make any sense??? It's the only way I've come to "live" with voicing or not voicing my opinions at different times.
BTW, how old is your dd? I have 2 ds's, age 12 and 10 who can both play this same song on their electric guitars. I've probably colored ourselves now !

Are you upset because it is an Ozzy Osbourne song, or is there something in particular about this song that bothers you?

ds Paul, informed me that he and Joe work out to this song. (so I HAVE heard it wafting up from the basement) He said it is one of a few "decent" songs..
they try hard to find "classic rock" that is not s*xual, or using inappropriate language...which dh helps them discern. he was a Guns n Roses guy back in the day, I was more Tears for Fears, so I'm of no use!!

Is this a homeschool orchestra or mostly public school? My bets are on more of a public school crowd where I have always felt that a lot of things are introduced early.
Good for you for saying something. You know some people don't even realize that maybe there is a questioning that should go on. Like for instance when I told the lady at the grocery store that I believed it was totally inappropriate for a large beer display to be next to a Happy Graduation display last June. When she thought about it, I saw her "click" and she said, wow you are right, that doesn't look right. Some times just mentioning a different position can help to inform people. So even if the orchestra leader doesn't change this song...you've got her/him thinking for the future at least (hopefully).
Good luck!

hmmm, 6-10 year olds? that's a bit young, I think. I didn't see you mention an age in your first post and I assumed earlyish-mid teen.
isn't high school musical-ish music the in thing for that age group? (and don;t get me started on that!! )
what does your dh think? could he be the one to say something? from his personal experience, kind of??

Perhaps this song was selected as it is in the popular Iron Man movie. I see kids wearing the Iron Man t shirts and such and so maybe this is a popular thing with ps kids now. In the movie the lyrics aren't sang, just the instruments and so this would make sense to me as to why the director chose it. It is a very fun song without the lyrics...my kids have all sang the "do do dodo do" at various times.
Just a thought.

Good grief- an Ozzy Osbourne song for 6-10s? Are you kidding me?! I don't know, Donna- that would really, really bother me. I totally understand your discomfort with the situation. Since it is the orchestra and so they aren't singing the lyrics, that does make it a *little* better, but...

I completely agree.
So....what should you do about it?..... Oh, I don't know. I just don't know what I would do in your situation. I would definately talk with the director about it. It seems so ridiculous that they would choose a piece like that when there is so much *good* music to choose from! I will pray as you discern whether to allow your dd to play it. Big hugs.

I don't understand the issue since there are no lyrics being used. Its just an instrumental. What could the harm be?

Without going into any detail, I can say that once a person has been immersed in a bad situation (very scary and dark subculture being one very bad situation!), it is very hard to even hear or see things that recall that time period. There are certain types of music that are simply not allowed in my home - not because they are *bad* in and of themselves, but because of the memories they conjure up - I'm not thinking of direct memories alone, but also emotions, ways of thinking, etc. It would be like an ex-drug addict being shown a plastic bag of white powder (looks like something else!).
Music alone, without words, has power to conjure up images, whether a person has heard the lyrics before or there never were any lyrics.
What to do in this particular situation? I'm not sure either - I know I would be extremely uncomfortable. The more I think about it, the more likely I would be to pull out. I have to be that protective of myself and my family sometimes.

thanks for the update.
Catholic Mommy, you have a good point. this also brings to mind men/boys and visual images.
Dancing with the Stars is NEVER going to be seen in our home for example, but for others it's "no big deal".
Donna, that is so wonderful that your daughter is a mentor in that way. Your family has influenced others and caused them to think, and that's inspiring!
