Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 18 yo son is learning to play the bagpipes. He started out on a chanter, kind of like a clarinet, and is ready to graduate to the pipes, except, they cost $1500 which we do not have and are not likely to have anytime soon.

My son has paid for every single lesson with his own money. His instructor is a Scot and is one of the top instructors in the country, my son has really grown to love the instrument and the Scottish culture through this experience. He got a seasonal job as a reenactor and every cent he made went toward the lessons. This spring he will be shearing sheep again to continue his lessons, but as for the $1500 for pipes, well, he's stuck at this point.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an organization that provides grants to musical students who can't afford their instruments? He has worked so hard for this, any ideas?

Thanks.

Maddie, I bought my dh a set of bagpipes for Christmas from a thrift store, and I see there are plenty going on ebay for $99 - $200 buy it now prices. These obviously aren't the silver spackled african blackwood styles, but surely they'd be a step in the right direction?

My other thoughts are to post on your local Freecycle/CraigsList or even in the local paper and have you talked to the instructor? Bagpipes are an instrument easily taken up and just as easily dropped. Maybe you could contact some of his previous students to see what they'd want for the dusty set of bagpipes in their closet?

Finally Maddie, has your son considered Lyon College? He could minor in Piping or at the least attend the Piping Summer School this year.

Oh, and regarding grants, the only two I know of are for schools, I think. The Mister Holland's Opus and the VH1 Save the Music.

Actually, when I went to find the links, Mr Hollands Opus says individual students, so there might be a possibility there.
