Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This year our curriculum has suggested that the kids learn to recognize and then memorize the titles/composers to about 5 pieces that fit in the time period we are studying. One thing that the kids have enjoyed is also learning some pieces by those composers on piano.

I thought I would share some of the music they are using in case you would like to try them:

Pachelbel's Canon in D--written in D (you would be surprised at how many aren't written in D)

Vivaldi's The Four Seaons This says in easy arrangements, but it's not super easy. There are some 32nd notes.

My kids are at level 2. Their teacher hasn't pushed them to progress as much as she has encouraged them to try a range of styles and that has made them able to play some of the pieces that are beyond their level.

And just because it's easy to miss if you only use "active topics", I'm going to link to the old composer studies that have been hosted here.

Found a couple more:

Essential Classical This was their first classics book. Ave Maria, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, the Can Can and more

Patriotic Songs Star Spangled Banner, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Hail to the Chief, Souza and more

Rhapsody in Blue Gershwin Easy Intermediate I hearing Thomas play this.

Lewis and Clark This is different. More like an easy history book with music to go with the different events being discussed.

This is a great appraoch. I do this sometimes but should be more consistent. It definietly adds another cultural element to the study of a historical period.

I have one that is playing piano and I like the idea of haivng her incorporate soem period tunes - thatnks for the resource ideas for piano, Rachel.

Just in general, I would love to see others add musical resources for the historical periods. Please add your ideas and resources, everyone!

I have some we've used for Lewis and Clark studies:
Music on the Trail - great narrative and background information

Lewis and Clark Then and Now: Music and the Expedition - video on the music of the expedition along with demos and sample songs, done for school groups

References to music taken from the expedition's journals

Some albums of music from the time period:
Pierre Cruzatte: A Musical Journey Along the Lewis & Clark Trail
Fiddle Tunes of the Lewis and Clark Era
Lewis & Clark: Sounds of Discovery
