The kids and I saw a live production of My Fair Lady yesterday. Loved it! Now we are ging to hire the Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn version on DVD and watch it again....This has re-sparked our interest in musicals. Any on DVD that are your favourite?
P.S. Don't mention Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! My seven sons get this quoted to them all the time, when people find they are seven brothers and no sisters!

Well, Sound of Music has special meaning for us since we lived in Austria and went to Salzburg lots.Oklahoma is fun as is Guys and Dolls. We also love Fiddler on the Roof.
These musicals (and others) are great for living history ... they do a good job portraying the fashions, mores of the time.

When I was young, Sound of Music. Now that I'm a parent, Fiddler on the Roof.
I like Guys and Dolls, but I'm starting to be leary of the usually musical theme of "good girl falls for bad guy and he reforms" It just doesn't seem to be a wise idea to cultivate that into people's heads.
That said, I always loved The Music Man with Robert Preston.
Hello Dolly is fun, too, but as a child I didn't know Barbara Streisand's personality. Not sure I could get past that now
And as far as movie musicals go, it is hard to beat Singing in the Rain (watching it with my children, I realize I would now skip the sensual dance sequence in the middle of "Broadway Melody"--unnecessary and boring for kids anyway) or White Christmas, imo. Royal Wedding is my favorite Fred Astaire; though, Daddy Longlegs is fun, too (though, again with young ones, it could be tricky to explain some stuff towards the end. Nothing explicit, but I'd rec you watch it first before showing your kids)
Actually, the end of My Fair Lady drives me nuts, and after I read Pygmalion, I realized it wasn't just me, lol, that the original playwright didn't like that ending either It's pretty fun before that, though
I'd recommend for you An American in Paris and Gigi, but my personal opinion is that there would be too much I wouldn't want to have to explain to my children about mistresses.

Yk, I loved the Disney musicals as a child. In Search of the Castaways. I loved Summer Magic, too.
Another great one for your crew of boys would be Newsies. It got a bum wrap when released, imo. Excellent opportunities for discussions about child labor, labor unions, etc...--all without being too heavy for young ones, imo.

OOOH Lindsay ... I'm with you. Newsies is a great one for talking about child labor, labor laws, how immigrant families were often ruined if dad got hurt and there was no compensation ... what a sad time for our country!

I loved Summer Magic!!!! Sound of Music, Meet Me in St. Louis, and White Christmas are all ones that my kids have adored! I remember enjoying one as a kid called Kiss Me Kate but I haven't seen it in years and don't know if there is anything inappropriate.

Kiss Me Kate is GREAT! A musical retelling of the Taming of the Shrew with great songs and some really funny bits. Nothing is inappropriate and it's a fun watch -- especially if you're doing a Shakespeare Unit! Ya gotta love Howard Keel!

We love Gene Kelly:
Singin' in the Rain
Anchor's Aweigh
Take Me out to the Ballgame
And Bing Crosby:
White Christmas
Holiday Inn
Going My Way
Bells of St Mary's
I love the music from Oklahoma, the story leaves something to be desired.

Oh yes! Meet Me in St. Louis
Tootie is a hoot, and it was Judy Garland's best, imo!
And Anchors Aweigh! I love Katherine Grayson, and how can you beat a duo like Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra? A really young Sinatra--his "I fall in love too easily" in that is my favorite performance of his. His voice still sounds so pure and innocent instead of edgy like he does when older.

Any by Bing -- we really like High Society but there is some stuff in there that may be inappropriate (getting drunk, "fallen woman", etc)

I have always enjoyed West Side Story. It is a bit mature for younger viewers but I just love the dance numbers.

I remembered we also have Phantom of the Opera on DVD and we LOVED that - so that is going on my list, too.

I love musicals! My faves are:
The King and I (saw it on Broadway with Yul Brynner:)
The Music Man (watch it every year around 4th of July)
Singin in the Rain (yes, the romantic dance scene is odd but I have to admit that I would kill to have Cyd Charisse's legs!)
The Sound of Music (It wouldn't be Easter season without it)
Mary Poppins (often watched by children sick on the couch)
Fiddler on the Roof
On the Town (Doesn't get more superficial than that!)
Bells of St. Marys
Meet Me in St. Louie, Louie
White Christmas
West Side Story (but Tony isn't believable according my dd - but then again, gangs singing and dancing are a bit of a stretch )
Cats!...OK, not a favorite but I have some very funny family memories connected with it.
1776 - we think it is hilarious
The rest mentioned above that I have seen and don't like much -
7 Brides - kinda odd
Oklahoma - weird domestic violence scene
Hello Dolly - can't get past Babs
American in Paris - too canned, even for a musical
Take Me Out to the Ball Game - Oh no, it just didn't fly with our ball players!
Somehow I've not seen:
Guys and Dolls
Royal Wedding
Daddy Longlegs
Gigi
Newsies
Kiss me Kate (saw it as a play)
Summer Magic - I just don't dig Haley
Anchors Away
Others we haven't liked:
Funny Face - Fred was just too old or Audrey was too young - pretty forced stuff
Damn Yankees - really creepy devil stuff but I love the song, "You Gotta Have Heart!"
Oliver! - way too long and of course, dreary
Love,

I agree 7 Brides is "odd", but the dance sequences make it worth watching, imo. If you think the movie is odd, don't bother with the stage version should you have a chance. I was Millie in high school, and it is not as good, imo.
I have horrible memories of being forced to watch Oliver over and over in elementary school music class when the teacher was busy in the Spring with the high school musical. I hated it.
I just saw 1776 for the first time this summer! It was very fun, and I'm guessing that the stuff around Thomas Jefferson's wife would probably go over little one's heads. Mine were young enough that I'm positive it did!
I don't know if I was exceptionally naive or just normal, but I am sometimes shocked when I watch some of these movies as an adult having missed a lot of the innuendo as a kid I can't decide if that means I should or shouldn't let my kids see it

I have to agree American in Paris isn't my favorite, but it is just so classic with the Gershwin score (great music) and the scene with Gene Kelly tapdancing on roller skates. Not so great as his famous performance in Singing in the Rain, but just one of those things that any movie musical goer should see once. I guess its iconic.
Can you tell I was a music major and a theater minor. I love hearing others takes. I just put Kiss Me Kate on my list since I have somehow missed seeing that one.
Someone tell me if Brigadoon is worth seeing. Its another one that's been on my list for years.

I didn't go for this one either - can't remember why and my teen dd isn't here right now to remind me
Yes, in 1776 the Thomas Jefferson thing was odd...some other things I remember thinking, "this is getting long"...but watching our Founding Fathers sing and dance is worth it for me.
I was an education major, minored in pinochle , but my Mom loves musicals and has handed that down to me and my dd (the men in our family scratch their heads )
Love,

I had a bad experience with Fiddler on the Roof and my daughters. I blogged about it here and here. That seems to be a problem with most of the stuff that I loved as a kid. I watched so many musicals I don't remember them all but when I go back and watch them now, I know that my kids won't like them. Hubby and I just recently watched The Court Jester because he thought the kids would like it. I looked at him and said, "There is no way our girls would like those low cut outfits" and a few other things if I remember correctly. It's hard because I want to share these childhood memories with them, but then again, my childhood was not that closely guarded. What to do?

It is a conundrum, isn't it? I watched White Christmas a quarter of a million times during the course of my life, and only in the past couple of years, I watched it shocked because those dancers aren't wearing clothing
I think that your insights into Fiddler are right on. Given when it was made, your take is probably correct. However, I saw it more as his dealing with the loss of tradition--not as its promoting the loss of tradition. The world creeping into their little village and messing it up.
My sister is literally married to a communist (not just a liberal but a Marx quoting socialist kind of guy). So, I can relate to that part of the movie--though, she hasn't followed him to Siberia
Both my sister and I converted from Protestantism to Catholicism--so, I'm pretty sure my parents felt a lot like Tevye, too.
Anyway, I can understand your experience, but I stand by it being a favorite even more as an adult because I can better understand all the conflicts going on. And, in a way, I enjoy it more with a fuller recognition of the tragedy involved.
However, I still don't find it as depressing as Oliver.
