We've just bought gluten-free playdough from Colorations, Discount School Supply's store brand, and it has a strange sickly-sweet smell, rather like the disinfectants used in public restrooms. I'm thinking of adding essential oils, in the hopes of masking it, but I'm kind of worried that that might just make it worse.

Does anyone know if the Lakeshore Learning brand is also smelly? It's quite a bit more expensive, IIRC, but Colorations isn't looking like such a bargain at the moment. I'm pretty sensitive to smells (this started when I was expecting baby #2, and oddly never completely went away), so this product isn't likely to work out for us, except maybe for outdoor use.

As an alternative, we would love to find a reliable recipe for homemade GF playdough, with very similar properties to the commercial kind. We have many recipes for other types of dough and clay, but sometimes the children want the "real thing."

Wow, this stuff is whiffy. When I walk past the open container, I can almost hear flushing noises in the background.   


(Follow up: I took a little out and squeezed it around, and it made my fingers red and tingly, even after washing it off. Whatever the mystery ingredient is, it doesn't like me either. I guess we'll donate this to a local preschool, and hope that their children aren't bothered by it.)

Here's a Model Magic-type clay you can make (it dries hard!)

Mix 1 c. cornstarch into 2/3 c. water.

Dissolve 2 c. salt into 2/3 c. water. Boil the salt water.
Knead mixtures together while heating until it is clay.

I also have this one in my file, but haven't ever tried it. I'm dying to know how it turns out though, if anyone is game!

SNOW PLAY DOH:

1 cup Ivory Snow laundry detergent

2 cups warm water

food coloring

electric hand mixer or egg beater

Add food coloring to warm water, then add to laundry detergent. Mix well with beater until fluffy. Use just like regular play doh.
