Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know of a 3 part lesson for using watercolors?    I'm usually very good of breaking up things logically to show the kids how to do them properly; but, my art experience is very limited so I am looking to you all. I'm looking for steps from beginning to end like getting the water, paper towel/sponge, using the brush properly, etc. I've googled this; but, haven't found what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

I've never seen a specific presentation like you're asking for, Jackie.

It really doesn't seem that difficult to put together though...are you sure you couldn't just wing something like that, Montessori style?

I don't think you'd need to know in depth about water color painting to do that. Maybe just make sure your tray is set up with every possible tool needed, and be sure to emphasize the thorough cleaning of the brush in water before re-applying color. Maybe you could even take a page of watercolor paper and cut it up into smallish squares to set on the side of the tray to use as a blotter and to check to see if color remains on the brush before putting a brush in a new color?

Maybe you're right Jennifer. I may be complicating it too much in my mind simply because I am not experienced.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but here are some watercolor tutorials for kids: Hearts and Trees.

I don't have a three-part lesson on watercolor, but I do have a presentation on how to show the child how to explore properly with the material. Basically, it's just showing the child step by step what to do, but your own "painting" is just making lines on the paper so that the child can choose whatever creative idea he has. You can also show how to mix one combination, so the child knows how and can explore further.

I can post if you like. Let me know!

I am interested to see it. If you don't mind, please post it. Thanks a lot!

I am going to attempt a copy/paste of my presentation write-up and I'll adjust as needed to make it look pretty... This is what we 'received' in AMI Montessori training this past year, but as with everything else (particularly in practical life where we placed our visual art pieces), feel free to adjust as you see fit. It is nice to start from some sort of guideline though isn't it, even when the final result is way different!

Visual Art

Exploration of Color

PAINTING

Materials: one or two trays with a paperweight, two glasses, palette with paste watercolors in primary colors, natural bristle watercolor brush, small dish with square of paper towel, dish with extra squares of paper towel; art oilcloth; apron; watercolor paper (stored separately)

Prerequisite: some experience with color tablets; painting with watercolors/temperas

Presentation
1.     Invite an individual child and have him place the art oilcloth on the table.
2.     Show where the materials are kept; invite him to bring them to the table.
3.     Put on an art apron.
4.     Name the materials as you place them on the mat.
5.     “We will need a piece of paper for watercolor painting.” Go to choose one.
6.     Place the paperweight at the top edge of the paper on the mat, explaining that it holds the paper in place.
7.     Go with the child to fill the glasses about half full of cold water.
8.     Ask the child to choose two colors and place a small amount of each into the compartments on the palette, saying “See how little I take.”
9.     “Now I will show you how to mix the colors. Watch.” Pick up the brush. Explain that one glass is for wetting the brush and the other is for rinsing. Wet the brush.
10.     Choose one color of paint; paint on the paper. 11.     Refill the brush and put some of the first color in an empty space of the palette. Rinse the brush, dabbing the excess water to assure the brush is clean.
12.     Choose another color of paint, paint some on the paper, refill the brush and add it to the first color. Mix with the brush and paint on the paper.
13.     Invite the child to repeat.
14.     When the child is finished show her how to clean up. Show her how to clean the brush under cold running water, rinsing and kneading the bristles until the water runs clear.

Extensions: Look at and discuss the use of color in master art works and other watercolor paintings.

Points of Interest/Consciousness: seeing the mixed colors

Direct Aim(s): exploration of space, expression of self
Indirect Aim(s): Coordination of movement

Age: 3+ after sufficient control of movement to handle the materials

Language: primary colors, secondary colors, pigment

Endnotes: clean the brushes with cool water as warm or hot water will loosen the glue and the bristles will come loose.
When painting, create lines and indefinite shapes so the child is encouraged in his creativity (and won't be discouraged by a high standard of perfection).
