Does anyone have kids who ballroom dance? I sarted to ballroom dance with my dh (stopped 12 years ago when hyperemesis first hit!!) - my dd is quite interested. The shows are good (apart from the very immodest dresses - so irritating - when I danced we wore tasteful and modest dresses). I would have no idea where to look for lessons - but when we watch all the Jane Austens etc I just love to watch the waltes and tea dances. So elegant!

Marilyn,
In Louisiana we had a program called Junion Cottillion. Each session lasted for a few months. The kids meet once a week or so to have dance lessons as well as lessons on manners (table manners, how to ask or receive an invitation to dance, etc.) as well as personal grooming and comportment. At the end of each session there was a ball. I believe it is a national organization.
Of course, there is also folk dancing to consider too. I have a friend who met her husband that way!

My older children are taking college level ballroom dancing at a local college. Is there a college nearby that might allow your children to take a non-credit class? When I lived in VA we had a Father/ Daughter dance every spring and hired a ballroom dance instructor, maybe there is someone near you who you could hire? Also, I would inquire at a ballet studio for leads, they often are very knowledgeable on the local dance scene.
I know a dance instructor that teaches clogging in VA, I would be happy to give you her name and email, she may have a lead for you too.

Marilyn, are you looking for ballroom dance lessons for your daughter? A friend of mine who has her children in lessons is "forever" forwarding me emails from their dance instructor, who based in Frederick, MD. I seem to remember one email that referred to a dance in NOVA. You might be able to track down a teacher for your daughter through this instructor. I found some contact information for her here (you have to page down though): http://www.fbdanceclub.org/. Her name is Maria LaRocca. Anyhow, she works specifically with youth and might know instructors in your area to whom she could refer you.

Where exactly are you at? PM me.
We have this in the Lake Charles area. My second son has always bowed out and I think it's mostly girls who attend but this past year they are having this as well as ballroom dance lessons held separately and some boys have attended and are enjoying it. My 10-year-old dd is excited about "coming of age" to attend.
There is talk of starting an annual prom in our area.

I use to ballroom dance too and I can't stand the raunch they put into the costumes and the dances these days. I sometimes enjoy watching Dancing With the Stars, but it is online, after the kids are in bed and without my husband. Watching that show you would think it wasn't possible to dance in anything more than a bikini and a kleenex.
If your daughter likes the Jane Austen kind of dances, you might consider English Country Dancing.

Honestly, Courtney, I don't. I learned how to ballroom dance in high school when a husband and wife who were starting a dance school came to the band director and asked if they could recruit some volunteers to perform as advertising in exchange for lessons. It was so much fun!!
I know that they use to offer free lessons at The Czech Club in Dallas when I was in college. A big band would play there once a month I think and there was someone who would give lessons before hand. If you just stick with the basic ballroom dances, you don't have to worry about the raunch (it's primarily the Latin dances like the Cha Cha, the Rhumba, and the Mambo that they like to s*x up) and a beginner shouldn't have to worry about that too much anyway. The Tango would be a fairly safe Latin dance for a beginner along with the Paso Doble. I started out learning the Fox Trot, Waltz and Swing. Fun dances, very ballroom, no raunch! Would you agree with that assesment, Marilyn?

Great ideas Maddie. I would need to find some other kindred spirits to arrange dance lessons - boys may be a problem - I think when I was a teen girls danced with girls because there was such a shortage of young men!
I will pm you my email - please forward to your former dance instructor in case she has a lead.

I agree Matilda. Dh and I did do the cha cha too - and it was fairly decent. We were in England and did a few fun line dances too.
I love to dance and I always feel that there is this sprite like graceful dancer trapped inside me somewhere  Maybe dh and I will get back to it someday. We are very different heights though - he is over 6ft3 and I am only 5ft2 - the heels helped, but we had to work hard.
My dd is very interested in ballroom - maybe she will move into it from ballet. My guys like it a little - though they will NEVER admit to it.
I have let them watch some of Dance with the Stars - it was a great platform for discussing how and how not to dress.
A few years ago when it was a very cold winter and I had a new baby - we bought a Drew's Dance video and learned some dancing - it was also my parent's big golden anniversary party and so my kids wanted to know how to do some of those party line dances. It was fun.
