within 1 minute my 4 yr old had painted the sun & a sunflower...then she was cross because she had no green to do the stem 'the sunflower will fall over' *then* we had asnack, came back to look & the paint had spread so much the whole page was yellow
any thoughts, advice????? it would be greatly appreciated!

We need help here too. I told Lissa's little story of the Gnome who doesn't want to get his beard wet.
I dolloped a tad bit each of yellow, blue, and red in a tray. Put some water on the paper - and now I have "treasured" pieces of watercolor "art" that bled into brown blobs! My 5.5dd attaches herself (emotionally) to EVERYTHING and so of course this was a tragedy.
How do I introduce watercolors? Is there a book I should get? Or does the DOnna Simmons K book address this?

I was. I'm wondering, though, am I supposed to give them a jar of water, too? To clean the brush off? Or just water on the paper and that's it? If so, how do the colors not turn brown before you're done for the session?
Is there a good book you'd reccomend? to teach me how?
We're going to get them out again today.

From Painting with Children:
Use watercolors from a tube and mix with a brush to be used for mixing only. Mix each glass jar with enough color for everyone. Use one part paint to two pars water and dilute as necessary.
Distribute the colors into individual little dishes.
Fill jam jars two-thirds full with clear water for cleaning brushes. Change this out as necessary so it doesn't get dirty.
Dip the paper in a basin with water or wipe evenly with a wet sponge from side to side or top to bottom but not in a circle and don't rub or you'll get "paper lice." Turn the paper over and repeat the process on the other side. Soak up excess paper and straighten out any kinks or bubbles.
Then, give the child a brush and cloth (to wipe the brush and squeeze out extra water or paint)
Use broad flat hair brushes which allow the paint to be applied more delicately.
That's all I have time for this morning. Perhaps someone else can chime in with actual painting hints.

We use watercolour paper (140lb cold press) and I pre-soak it. Then I wipe it off.
The kids use three colours, tube paints put into small jars and diluted with water.
Works great... I'll try to get pictures... the kids do not make pictures as yet, they are still learning.

Cleaning the brushes between colors is vital. I actually gave dd 3 seperate jars full of water to wash her brush. One for each color. That really helped to keep the colors from getting muddy.

Just another idea - save those papers of watercolor washes when they are finished. A page of solid color paint wash makes a lovely background for a narration or copywork exercise. : )

Would this book help: Painting with Children -- it's on all the Waldorf lists/catalogs.
I haven't yet attempted this but I have been looking at this book and it seems to be able to answer your questions, ladies.

The ratio we use... hmm that's hard as I eyeballed it!
We used tiny paint jars from a local shop... probably about 1/2 the size of a baby jar.
I squeezed a 'worm' of colour from my WHSmith watercolours into it (present from Mum and Dad), about 1cm long. I then filled my jar about 2/3 full.
So I'd say you'd cover the paint with about 2cm of water, maybe 1.5cm in a baby jar sized container.
I taught the kids how to visit the 'worm' of paint.
