Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

::sigh::
I am getting slightly frustrated by the lack of music history materials for children through about grade 8 for the Medieval and Renaissance periods. There's plenty of fun, living books and audios starting around the Baroque period. We have the Music Masters series, which starts with Vivaldi/Corelli, and I wish I could find some similar resources for earlier composers.

The closest I have come to are Song of the Unicorn from the Classical Kids series and Learning About Gregorian Chant from the Monks of Solesmes Abbey. There is also the online archives for Harmonia, a weekly radio program of early music.

I'd like to find some print resources. Stef's July study on Hildegard von Bingen is a big help, for sure. I do also have an e-book I downloaded a few years ago from Teacher Created Materials that actually includes brief bios on Guillaume de Machaut and Palestrina.

Perhaps that is enough for my goal of providing an overview of the musical periods for my kids this year. For some reason, I want more. I guess that's because I'd like to continue study into the upcoming years in a chronological way to tie in with our study of world history, going more in depth with the musical styles and the various composer's lives. If you have suggestions, again, for these early periods, please send them my way!

Hi Valerie, I was planning to study Ockeghem next month, and then Gombert, if that helps any.

Two books on my list (though I haven't seen them live yet):

An Illustrated History of Music for Young Musicians - The Middle Age- Renaissance Period, and

A Concise History of Music From the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Time

Thanks, Stef. The first book you listed might be just the thing for my oldest next year. Although it is pricey (even used), I can probably justify that purchase if it's used as a core text.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming studies you have planned for us.
