Is anyone using the "Mommy, it's a Renoir" program?
I'm just curious how the kids like it. Are the postcards large enough to see detail? If you hang rotating prints on the wall, is it good to have a postcard basket just for the kids to look through?
Any thoughts?

We do use it. I rotate them in/out for matching , talking about the pictures, etc. When we talk about a specific artist, though, we use bigger prints and pull works up on the computer.

For those of you who use this (or any of the Child-Size Masterpieces), can you tell me if they include non-western art? Or do you have recommendations of materials that do? (Yeah, I know I could do this myself, but until I can spring for the colour printer, I don't think they'd turn out all that inspiring!)
Thanks,
Tracy

Yes, I use the Child-Size Masterpieces and it's been awesome. The postcard-size reprints give very good detail. If you do put posters on the wall, providing postcards as well (or books with pictures of paintings) would be a great touch.
As far as non-western art: the Child-size Masterpieces goes by schools of art, so for certain schools the art will be all European (Impressionism, for instance). There aren't any Asian or eastern artists that fell into that particular school.
When they move to modern art and cubism, then more countries, including non-western ones, are included.
If you'd like to add your own pictures of non-western art, eBay is a great place to find postcards and postcard books.

I have used this progream with my older two and then sold it ...but we're getting it again as I haven't been able to find ANYTHING that compares to it for what you get in the program, it's wonderful
Also, we the the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art
for inspiration, plus MANY online searches for a particular artist !!

We didn't like the postcard sized art. I also sold my "Mommy its a Renoir". Not that its bad....but we are a family of picky artists and we like BIG!! We have enjoyed great success with all the Lucy Micklethwait books for children. They are SUPER. They are secular. If you want something about the saints or religious scenes, please also consider:
The Life of Jesus in Masterpieces of art by Mary Pope Osbourne
A Child's Book of Prayer in Art by Sister Wendy Beckett
Lives and Legends of the Saints (gorgeous!) by Carole Armstrong
Saints and Angels by Claire Llewellyn
and for older children I have used Great Masters of French Impressionism by J. Carter Brown. I have them pick a painting and write a one page story or dialogue about what they imagine might be going on in the picture.
All these books are big and can be had for fairly cheap is you search at campusi.com

Thank you for all your input. Helene, the campusi.com site is a great tool! I had never seen it before.
I am trying to put together an art plan for my kids- they love to create, paint, draw, etc. I am really drawn towards the Artistic Pursuits program for some reason. I went ahead and ordered their preschool book, "As They See it" and figure I can start in with the k-3 program after that if we like it.
But I also want to be looking at paintings... I plan to rotate larger prints and talk about the artists (loved Elizabeth's chapter on this in Real Learning).
I like the idea, too, of having a basket of smaller prints that the kids can pick up and handle and look at.
I'm probably trying to do too much working all this in together, but really it would be one large print every 1-2 weeks on the wall, one lesson from Artistic pursuits a week and the basket of cards in our learning room.
I wound up requesting the "Mommy, it's a Renoir" teacher's guide through ILL. When it comes I'll look it over and see if I want to buy the whole program. Montessori and Such also has laminated sets of postcards by different artists- ie, a set of 24 Monet is $6.99.... another thought to contemplate....

Melinda,
I think I saw puzzles of great masterpieces of art in the Montessori and Such catalog. I think that is a great idea! It really gets the kids to study the painting as they complete the puzzle.
