Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was looking at this book from the publisher of Artistic Pursuits and wondering if anyone has it? Do you like it? Or do you think it would be better just to start in with the K-3 book?

I really like the looks of this whole program- just don't know where to start....

Hi Melinda,
When I saw this post earlier, I meant to comment though I don't have personal experience with this book (since it's new). In fact I didn't know it existed so I'm glad you pointed it out. They are a local company here but the last time I saw a booth of their products was last summer and it wasn't available. Now I see from the Montesorri thread that you went ahead and purchased it. I'm sure it will be very good - the rest of their program is wonderful.

I would have said that it's probably not a necessary book and you would be fine to go right into the rest of the program with no problem, but that being said your children still are young and you can take advntage of using this preschool book. There was an earlier discussion on art for preschoolers and if this book had been available I would have included it, since I feel the author has the approach of process over product which is important for that age of artist. If it been available when my oldest children were preschoolers I would have gotten it. Please give us a review when you get it. I'd love to hear.

Hi, Mary

We do have lots of preschool art books ( and get tons through the library) but I went ahead and got this book because I like how it explains what the child is thinking and how their art skills develop (the "grown up talk" sections). I haven't seen this in other books. I probably need it more than the kids- I like to read about the whole development process.

I am glad you gave the whole program such a good recommendation. With trying to teach art at home, I think this approach will be invaluable. I will let you know how the book is!

I have not used the new book but we did start our entire family on the first K-3 book by Artistic Pursuits last fall and have loved it. I have done the lessons alongside my 11, 7, and 4 year old. It is interesting for all ages without much modifying for the younger set.   We give it a thumbs up!

Just reviving this thread to post my long overdue review of this book. It is the "prequel" to the Artistic Pursuits series. I was just thinking today how helpful this book has been.

I have learned about the nature and natural progression of children's drawings... how they see and interpret the world around them. I have learned how to encourage creativity in my dc- how to ask them leading questions about their artwork and how to inspire them to go further with it.
I have been amazed at some of the pictures my kids have created with some gentle guidance.

I don't have another preschool arts and craft book that offers this insight, so it was well worth it to me to pay full price for this one. I still give it two thumbs up!

This is just what I thought, too.

The book is divided into different "projects", each one focusing on an aspect of creating art - texture, observation of detail, etc, etc. And each project can be visited again and again, to concentrate on an untouched aspect. (Eg, we did the "Seeing the Sky" project many times. What does the sky look like in the morning? at noon? afternoon? evening? night? Do my drawings look different when I use watercolors, or crayons, or markers?)

Before the description of each project is a page detailing the development of preschoolers and examples of their art. On each developmental page is a reminder that a child's art is not going to be like an adult's creations (priceless for this perfectionistic mom) and details on why.

I love this book, it was well worth the cost. I'll be using this for years to come!
