The artist study for July will be Edgar Degas. Degas was born July 19, 1834 so we will celebrate his birthday by studying some of his works.
Degas is most famous for his paintings and sculptures of ballerinas. About half of his works are ballet themed so two of the four paintings chosen are ballerinas. I think there will be many little girls enjoying this study! Like a photograph Degas’ paintings freeze motion. Degas mostly painted what went on behind the scenes rather than the big events or performances. Degas enjoyed painting figures in motion so in addition to the ballerinas he also painted many horse race scenes as well as circus/acrobat scenes.

The Dance Class - 1874
There is another painting with the same title that is very similar but was painted the following year using many of the same sketches.
Have your children look at the similarities and look at the differences.

And I wanted to include one of his sculptures also - this is the most famous. It is quite novel in that it includes a real cotton skirt and hair ribbon.

The paintings above are featured in some resources:
"Bellelli Family" – an early life size group portrait displays his life long fascination with human relationships. This painting depicts the tense domestic situation of his Aunt Laure’s family. DK Great Artists book has a nice analysis of this painting on p. 78.
"Dancer on Stage" is featured on p. 27 of Usborne The Children’s Book of Art.
"The Dance Class" has a detailed analysis in Annotated Guides Art, p. 86.
The model for "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen" was Marie van Goethen. The books Elizabeth mentioned (Degas and the Little Dancer and Marie in Fourth Position) are about Marie as the model.
Books:
Katie Meets the Impressionists(Monet, Renoir, Degas)
Joan Sweeney books - series about an animal and the artist
Bijou, Bonbon, and Beau
Suzette and the Puppy is about Mary Cassatt, but Degas figures into the story since his niece, Suzette is the model for the painting.
Julie Merberg - A great series of board books for the younger set.
Dancing with Degas
Degas and the Dance includes both Dance Class paintings as well as Dancer on Stage.
Smart About Art Series
Edgar Degas: Paintings that Dance was mentioned by Elizabeth.
What Makes a ... a ... Series - includes 12 paintings by artist with analysis.
What Makes a Degas a Degas? (includes Bellelli Family and the 1876 Dance Class paintings)
Art Activity Packs by Mila Bouton – include biography, reprint to color and discussion of a technique -Degas
Art Explorers Series - introduces readers to a period of art and some of the artists, with hands-on activities. Picture This! Activities and Adventures in Impressionism (Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, Cassatt) p. 24-31 has several great activities for studying Degas and producing similar style of art.
“People on the Move” – make a drawing that captures motion using pastels
“Action Figures” – make a sculpture of a person in motion using pipe cleaners, aluminum foil, and plaster gauze.
“Changing Faces” – pick a facial expression to draw

The Musee D'Orsay in Paris was my favorite museum because of its Degas collection. The sculpture above is there. On this pagethere is analysis of two Degas paintings.
