Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,
I am wondering what to do with my two boys, ages 9 and 7, to learn art. Does anyone one have any suggestions on what I can do?

Hi Rebecca,

I'll tell you what I do with my 9 and 5 y.o. dss. For drawing practice we sketch in nature notebooks and illustrate narrations from history, Bible, and storybooks.

We use lots of different materials like colored pencils, crayons, watercolors and acrylic paints. We also have some pastels.

We have a Draw-Write-Now book but my 9 yo didn't use it much. I'll have the 5 try it next year.

We copy paintings. Just get a good children's book with some paintings you like, put on some classical music and let them copy.

Potato prints are great first printing projects. I use acrylics for these too (those are the cheap little bottles of "craft" paint you can get in lots of colors at Hobby Lobby or other craft stores).

Our library has a great video series with several projects to try. They're produced by Coyote Creek and Edith Cooper. Some of the titles are Felt Pen Fun, Plants of the Rain Forest, More Fun with Watercolors, and Easy Art Projects.

Something fun for kids that we did at an Arts Festival this weekend was a huge mural. Paper was stretched out over a frame(a fence would work just fine) and plenty of paints were provided in muffin tins along with brushes and water. Friends could be invited over for this!

Our favorite project is card making. They get to practice painting, drawing, lettering, rubber stamping, cutting, gluing, color coordinating, collage, etc. and everyone gets a nice homemade card for their birthday

Rebecca,
First,
This book might be worth checking out from your local library:
Encouraging the Artist in Your Child

Your boys are a bit old for this book per se, but it might give you a leg up on understanding art supplies and how they work.

Second,
This program has many levels to choose from and we have enjoyed the first level very much and plan to purchase the next video series (we very much feel we have gotten our money's worth from this somewhat pricey program)...
Atelier Art Program for Homeschoolers
