Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was just wondering how many art and craft projects people schedule per week? Does it depend on what you are studying, time of year, outside actvities, etc? I am trying to plan some of our year and just trying to decide how many projects per week are doable.

Thanks so much!

Per week I wish! Unfortunately, my *I hate the mess attitude* leaves my kiddos a bit lacking in the hands-on art, although I really encourage them to add to their nature notebooks each week with skteching and pictures or stickers or whatever they fancy at the moment. A girlfriend and I are going to try and hook-up with an art teacher later this summer so all our kids can be messy together.

Can't wait to hear more responses on this. I am a big advocate of painting on the easel Outside when we can

Marybeth,
I'm not sure how old your kids are or how many you have. I have 2 children, 7ds and almost 4dd, so I have my schoolroom geared for arts, and creative work. I don't know that I would call anything we do a 'craft'. I really prefer art/specific skill building. The exception might be our recent work. We have had a playdoh-a-thon here for the past several days and it is pretty trashed in here with hunks of dough, cutters, tools and lovely cut out bears, snowmen etc. Currently there isn't a clear counter or floor spot (converted dining rm w/wood floors). Additionally, my ds built a bird house from a cardboard box yesterday as well as a couple of robots from the playdoh tools. Normally I would have had this chaos penned in by now but they have been very busy and I'm very pregnant.

I really love to emphasis art and science right now. My son has been struggling with reading (so have I!) so I am concentrating on what he truly enjoys. We are going through the Atelier Art program , video by video so the last several weeks before this playdoh mayhem we were making reproductions of VanGogh's works as well as mask making and other cutting/pasting/oil pastels projects. Our hs rm is really set up for it; with drop cloths, aprons, easels, all the art trimmings right in their reach and paper, paper and more paper all of sizes, colors and textures in cabinets with the other tools. I keep tons of hand cloths and wipes on hand for quick clean-ups and never stray too far from the room when they are working hard.

Frequently I go in, shore up their most precious works in folders and toss the rest for my sanity. Of course I wait to do this while they are outside playing.

I have NO IDEA how this is all going to work when #3 comes along. I just have come to adore the creativity and the intensity with which they work. Make no mistake, I have been Type-A, retentive and neat freak type my whole life, but the more I see their work, the more I melt for their art and science ideas. My saving grace is that I'm very organized in here and can pull the room together pretty quickly, especially when bending at the waist IS possible.

I encourage you to let the creativity flow! Well... as much as your situation allows you to do. I am so glad I have, not that it doesn't drive me nuts once in a while!

I have three girls, almost 6, almost 5 and almost 3. They have free access to crayons, markers, glue sticks, scissors, colored pencils, reams of paper (plain, lined, construction), stickers, "scrapbook stuff" etc. We get out the "messy" art box every other day or so. That's the playdoh, glitter, little foam shapes and feathers and pom-poms to glue to things, glitter glue, watercolors, and tempera paints.
Once a week we get together with 2 other hs families for a craft project. Mom's take turns hosting and coming up with the idea, gathering supplies, etc. It's taken awhile to teach everyone about appropriate use of tools (still working on the 2 yo) and clean-up, but so far things are going well.

Marybeth,
I found a book on my shelf that has been waiting patiently to be read. FINALLY it got it's turn today and it may be exactly what you are looking for!

The often recommended, Encouraging the Artist in Your Child (Even If You Can't Draw) subtitled, 101 Failure-proof, home-tested projects for kids age 2-10.

From the very beginning of the book she outlines so many helpful ideas about when, how, how much, where, why, how long and what about every aspect of art projects in the home. Try your library and see if they have it.

Thanks Amie! I am going to try my library. My ds loves to do art projects and such. We have always had all his art supplies readily available to him. I just don't do too many scheduled projects. I just go with the flow of what mood he is in that day. ie: cut and paste, paint, draw, etc.

I guess I lack ideas b/c I truly lack creativity.

Thanks again for the book suggestion. I would love to be able to get some Moms together in my area like Jennifer does. I tell you I may have to move in with Jennifer b/c she does all these cool things with her girls!
