Hello I am looking for some advice or experience with the Memoria Press Latin programs. We used Prima Latina last year and LOVED it! This year we are sorta trudging through Latina Christiana I although I like the program the grammar part is proving quite difficult for my 4th grader and sometimes even me!
My question is I know that it is recommended to use Lingua Angelica either WITH or AFTER LC 2...is that necessary? I purchased Lingua Angelica and looked it over, it seemed like we could do it next year and then pick up LC 2 the following year. However with my limited Latin experience I am reluctant to go against the grain so to speak. Any advice? Thanks, so much, in advance.

We are using Lingua Angelica now - my daughter is 6. She actually began with LA, was highly motivated, and moved into Prima Latina. Since it is mostly prayers and songs, I wouldn't think of any reason it has to go in a particular order. We are focusing on PL right now, and don't really use the books for LA. I let her listen to the songs and prayers and we casually translate them.
That is just how we approach it here, but Latin was not somthing I considered until Ocobter, so our plans were a little trial and error. I do think the way LA eases children into Latin with the simple songs helps to capture interest.

Oh Thank you for your response! I truly appreciate your view point. I was thinking this as well, something to sort of re-motivate them, especially my oldest who hates grammar in any form! I love the beautiful songs featured in LA and we use some at Mass in our Parish. I would love the boys to be able to translate them. Most of the prayers in LA we learned previously either in PL or in LCI so I think that would just be a nice reveiew for them.
I am so glad to hear that your daughter was motivated to move on in latin, it really is such a beautiful language! I hope you both enjoy latin for years to come! Thanks again!

Exactly. My daughter catches bits and pieces from LA in the Mass and is so excited that she understands what they are saying.

Ooh, now you've got me thinking! I guess I never considered LA until the kids are older, but my dd loves music and loves to sing so this might be just the thing to spark an interest in Latin. What would I need? I assume the CD and songbook. Would I need the teacher's manual in order to translate?

I love listening to the cd for LA. We listen to it in the car, or here at home. Just by listening, the boys have picked up quite a bit.
We are currently working through PL. Enjoying that, but a little wary about getting into LC 1, next year- I took German all through high school, but find Latin very different. I like the dvds and videos, so that the main instruction comes from someone else! (The boys do get a kick out of Ms. Lowe's southern accent!)
God Bless,

We use it much the same way Stacy - I play it on the way to Mass to try to set a tone.
LOL on the accent. She has a beautiful voice and I am from the south, but it is very noticeable.

Play the music all the time, any age. Do the workbook if you feel they are ready. Or, just enjoy the music and do basic translation without parsing. I do so enjoy the freedom of using a resource as I see fit, and not necessarily following anyone else's suggested serving.

Thanks Ladies, I so value your input! Macbeth, very nice way of looking at it! I only hope to be this brave! lol I know I NEED to be.
I like the idea of using the cd in various times, especially the car! That would really help in so many ways.
Becky, if you were planning to do the workbook you would need the teacher's manual for translation, unless you have alot of previous latin training or something. As I said, this will be our 3rd yr of Latin and I am still not comfortable translating some of it without the TM.

The parsing can be done if you've reached about half of LC2. We're almost there ;)
But my kids have been listening to the songs for the last few years. My son even plays one of them on the violin, and most of them on the piano.

Yeah! This is one of the reasons I love this particular method. You get the music (isn't that Ave Maria sublime?), and the basics of the language, too!
