Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm thinking of using the Church's current missionary activity to add some geography to our school day. Does anyone have any resources or websites to point me toward?

TIA,

Well, I don't know exactly, but I just had a great time looking up St. Paul Miki on the Harmony Catholic Encyclopedia CD (looked up martyrs Japan) and it came up with church documents outlining the church's missionary activity by continent. Wow, what an inspiration reading about the history of Catholics in Japan. It could become a whole unit study if I were into that. These documents would certainly be a starting point for what you are talking about.

Maryknoll Magazine has articles in each issue about their mission activities around the world.

We've recently been reading a bit about Korean martyrs. Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea's first native-born priest, is just one of the martyrs the Church honors on Sept. 20 each year.

Koreans actually became Catholic before any European missionaries arrived there...some lay Koreans met Catholic priests in other countries and brought back Catholic books...it's just fascinating to learn how the people studied the books and became convinced of the truth of our Faith before they'd even met a single priest! By the time European priests arrived there were already 50,000+ Catholic Koreans. The Koreans suffered terribly for their faith. Many were martyred and persecution was very intense.

Catholicism is still alive and well in South Korea. We should pray for our Catholic brothers and sisters in the North, who are not allowed to practice their faith.

My dd's godparents live in Seoul and have been to many of the important Catholic sites in Korea. The stories they tell are just fascinating.

Ann Ball's website has some very interesting articles and some links to the Basilian Fathers Mission website, which might also help you.

I could talk about this topic all day long...I'm looking forward to seeing what others have to say!
