Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just posted on my blog about our penguin unit, which turned into our Tour of Antarctica. So far we've toured North America, skipped South America and Australia and just finished Antarctica. I plan to start Asia at the end of February. How are you all doing on your tours?

Cheryl,

We're doing Antarctica now. Took a nice long break after Clara was born, got back into school for about a week, then my 3 oldest girls got the flu!

We're doing a penguin/Antarctica unit, too, thanks to your blog entry. I also got lots of book ideas from this penguin unit thread.

Week 1
Continent Outline

Watch DVD of The Emperor's Egg (my library didn't have the book, but they had the DVD--go figure) and narrate 3 things you learned about penguins for your Tour the Continents notebook. I used the penguin stationery and pictures from this site for the penguin narration.

Week 2
Beanbag activity--have kids walk around with a beanbag balanced on their feet. Try to pass beanbag to partner's feet without dropping it on the ground

Read first 1/2 of Antarctic Antics (a book of penguin poems)

Week 3
Read second 1/2 of Antarctic Antics

Make origami penguins from Easy Origami Animals by Ruth Ungert. My library didn't have it, but I was able to get it through inter-library loan.    It costs at least $39 on Amazon so maybe it's out of print?

The only thing I have to buy for this unit is origami paper.

I also guarded against over-planning this time... made sure everything I planned would fit into 2 days a week for 3 weeks. We just finished week 1 and it went very well.

Dawn
