Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm trying to put together a geography (both physical and cultural) unit for my precocious 6 yr old ds. While I want to cover the major physical geography concepts, I'd also like to include a composer study. I also have a fun lesson on Matryoska Dolls, which will interest dd 4 too. Any ideas, book lists, links to Blogs, are VERY appreciated! Thanks!

Picture books about Russia that we have enjoyed.

The Wolfhound (Kristine Franklin) - Set in Tsarist Russia. A boy finds a half frozen borzoi (Russian wolfhound) and nurses it back to health. Adventure follows. ( A rabbit trail on the history of this dog would be very interesting - Borzoi)

Philipok - Adaptation of a short story by Leo Tolstoy. It's about a little boy in 19th century Russia who wants to go to school with his big brother, but his mother says he is too young. One day he sneaks off to school. Cute story about learning (even if it isn't homeschool ).

A Symphony of Whales (Steve Schuch) - Set in a native village in Siberia. It's based on a true story of villagers and a Russian icebreaker ship saving thousands of beluga whales who were trapped in the Senyavina Strait by ice.

Sasha's Matrioshka Dolls - (Jana Dillon) - Set in old Moscow, is an entertaining story about a boxmaker who carves matrioshka (nesting) dolls for his granddaughter. Has fun, folksy illustrations.

The Littlest Matryoshka - (Corine Demas Bliss) is about a set of nesting dolls that are accidentally separated then later reunited. Very cute.

Matryoshka rabbit trails:

And the Patricia Polacco books are great for Russian culture and history - I love Rechenka's Eggs (and we will be coming up on the Lent and Easter seasons).

And here is the link for last year's Tchaikovsky study. A wealth of ideas.

While studying Russia, I found a video of the Bolshoi Ballet. It had many ballets, including Swan Lake. My boys even enjoyed it, although they found the very old clips amusing, especially when the 1yo hit the fast forward button! There were many different ballet videos from Russia to choose from at our library, and I found them in the adult "non-fiction" video collection.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI
