Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Earlier this year we did a great unit on Medieval history. Since then, we've completed a study on China and learned a lot of history about China. We're now getting ready to do a unit on the human body (digestion, vision, hearing, etc.). I feel this panic if we're not specifically covering a history period. Is it enough to keep reading living books of different people in history or time periods? My dd has such a link with Laura Ingalls and knows so much about that time period just from reading those books. I guess maybe I've answered my own question, huh? How do you all cover history? Do you go chronolocially or is it interest led? My dc are 6 1/2 and 9.

We kind of jump around but within a general chronological understanding of where it falls.

I have an idea for the body study - incorporate history by studying our understanding of the human body through history.

You would hit lots of historical time periods. There is fascinating stuff there - like what the Egyptians and Greeks thought about the human body systems. Particualrly focusing on Galen in the Grecco-Roman times (Galen and the Gateway to Medicine from Bethlehem Books). Another area is depictions of the human body in history - I'm thinking Leonardo da Vinci in particular. Early medicine and the understanding of the human body systems

Lots of history rabbit trails with this topic!

We jump around, too, but always stop and look at the big picture -- literally -- with the timeline on the wall.

Sometimes when we're doing a survey approach to something, such as Mary's suggestion re. the history of our understanding of the human body, we return to books like A Street Through Time and A City Through Time. Be sure to preview these, though, for your little people ... there are a couple of rude pictures that I think are unnecessary ....

We have always jumped around, we have never done history chronologicaly.

Although this year dh has suggested that we do a timeline. some of my dc are older than ours too. Dd13 absolutley 'refuses' to do history in a chronological order. In fact this year she will be doing history reads on her own and she doesn't want to group books together, ie. some roman reads etc. in her words she wants to do history books 'willy-nilly' I'm not phased she'll pull it all together I think dh's idea of a timeline will be good though.

In regards to not doing a history unit at present I don't worry about that either. I divide the year into 5week blocks (sometimes less) then I pick units from different disciplines, so we eventually cover science, history, nature etc over the year.
