Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been looking for a good text on US history from, say, the Civil War to the present.
I know that the literature based approach is great, but for my 14 year old son, who attended Catholic school up thru 5th grade, and who ( I hate to even type this , hates to read, a good text would be best.
Any suggestions?

Well, I can't be sure that there won't be questionable material in these suggestions, and you may want to look through them first, but maybe your library has them and you could take a look at them? Our library has them, and I have used parts of some while using Sonlight.

Someone a while back posted info on these books and we got a few. They look pretty good (though I can't vouch for them entirely, not having put them to a Thorough Test!): The Witness to History series. They are broken down into periods/events like World War I; WWII; Arab-Israeli Conflict; Afghanistan...you get the picture They are slim volumes (which will appeal to a less enthusiastic reader-I have a few of those, too!)and are presented in a "History of US" ala Joy Hakim style. I bought mine, used, off the internest-they were reasonable. As I say, they look pretty decent.

I also have a called Puritan's Progress: A Catholic Perspective, vols. 1-5. ALthough they are published by Angelus Press, which is the Pius X crowd, I haven't seen any negative discussion about our Popes-I *think* I read somewhere that the leading light in compiling this series was a Feeney-ite-which is why he threw his hat in with the Pius X gang- rather than a sede-vacantist. Again, I can't say I've scrutinized every page to check things out, but from what I've seen, those five slim volumes look like they'd provide a pretty good modern history background to 1969 or so. If anyone else out there has seen these and has input, I'd love to get it! Ever in search of good resources...
