OK-I can't find the thread we had about the Best Living History Sites we had ever visited...but I wanted to add to it a resounding  for Rancho de las Golondrinas near Santa Fe. I forgot who had mentioned it---possibly Mary???---but we just got back from visiting there and loved it. It was stunning. And we were there on a quiet day with absolutely nothing going on and no one in sight! Two hundred acres of Time Travel. We got into it so much we ended up buying New Mexican "Josefina"-y outfits for all the girls (and me)-even UltraCool dd13 participated . Thank you for putting us onto this jewel. It will be a tough act to follow (tho I'm still kicking myself at missing Plymouth Plantation, per Nancy's recommendation!)

Yes, it was me who recommended it - I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much. It truly is this surreal step back into time.
The original thread was here. I hope this mention will encourage more people to add their favorite living history places to the thread. To me this is the absolute best way to study history and unfortunately these sites don't always get the same kind of tourism publicity as the more commercial sites. Many times one can be in a city and not know such a treasure exists.
So, Kelly does this mean you have done your western trip and didn't stop in Denver  ? Would love to hear all the other sites you visited.

Well, I aspire to accomplish visiting that VAST list of parks you listed, Mary --or was that you, Gwen? Anyway, we're still a ways from achieving that goal, but made a good dent in the list driving 7062 miles in a month. We drove along a big rectangle, with the "corners" being Florida, Virginia, Utah and Texas. In between we visited (are you sure you're up to this???  ):
-Fort Frederica, Georgia
-Charleston, SC where we started our Pirate Hunt,
driving onto
-Beaufort, NC (where parts of Blackbeard's "Queen Anne's Revenge" are in a musuem), then ferried on to Teach's lair on...)
-Ocracoke Island, NC
-Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks
-Manteo & the outdoor performance of "The Lost Colony"
-Charlottesville, VA for family get-together (tried to stop at Patrick Henry's home enroute but it was closed, but did follow Jack Jouett's "British are Coming" route to Charlottesville. Our ancestor, Daniel Boone, was part of that incident, apparently, and served as a decoy to distract the British from going after Jouett! So we did some Daniel Boone studies along the way, enroute to re-uning with Boone relatives at UVa)
-West Virginia to a falconry academy, hiking and mountain biking
-drove like mad for 3 days thru Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska to get to
-Wyoming, Grand Tetons for 8 days
-Fossil Butte National Monument to excavate ordovician-era fish
-Salt Lake City-Brigham Young's house (for all his wives!  )
-Southern Utah for the Shakespeare Festival (& "Hamlet", great performance)
-Zion National Park
-Las Vegas & "Phantom of the Opera"
-Flagstaff (we were supposed to go stargazing at the Lowell, but forgot to account for the time change and missed it, wah...)
-Petrified Forest National Park
-Painted Desert
-got our kix on PART of Route 66
-Indian Market in Santa Fe and six days there. While ds did a polo thing during the week, sweating and grunting, we got to play at Rancho de las Golondrinas-wheeee)
-drove like mad back to Florida-1000 miles in 2 days.
It was a great trip, but my car DID try to turn toward Denver when we got to the intersection there in SE Wyoming...We'll have to do that next time!
