Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any suggestions for a history spine for a 4th grade student? Something that might carry us through 5th would be great.Specifically we are studying American history after the Civil War. We have been using Our Pioneers and Patriots and I plan to continue with that text but I want a bit more. I have used A History of US up until the Civil War and I was wondering if anyone had experience with that text in the later time period. According to the book description, From Sea to Shining Sea ends with the Civil War so that won't help.
Thanks.

Ooh, yes! Boorstin's LANDMARK HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, vol 2 (volumes 1 and 2 are collected in the same book). I've posted about this book a couple of times on this forum...my 9yo and I are thoroughly enjoying it.

It doesn't take a strictly linear/chronological approach, however...it follows trends & movements from the Civil War on. Has, for example, a section on about cowboys and cattle towns, a chapter about the shift from general stores to mail order catalogs (unbelievably fascinating), a chapter about the beginnings of oil drillings and the emerging uses for oil in its various forms and how that helped shape the nation, etc. A unique approach, quite engaging. Sonlight carries it. Don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but we have loved the way it shows the roots of things our society now takes for granted and how "little things" serve to shape the big picture.
