Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello!
I am new to Plutarch. Quite honestly, I have only heard of Plutarch and that's where my knowledge ends! I notice there are many different translations and also adapted versions for younger children. I'm looking for any help you can share about the best translations and adaptations! And anything else you can share about how to fit this into our lives and the benefits you have found from it.

Thank you!
Kelly

We have liked F.J. Gould's The Children's Plutarch: Tales of the Greeks/Tales of the Romans. These are very readable (independently) at an older-elementary level, and I use them for ancient history, as we loosely follow the Mater Amabilis course. My current 4th grader is about to finish Tales of the Greeks this year; my current 5th grader is finishing Tales of the Romans, which the 4th grader is set to read next year.

Gould would make a good read-aloud for younger grades studying Greece and Rome.

In high school ancient history (9th grade), I use Plutarch, as is (ie not a children's version), as a spine for history when we reach the Greeks and Romans. Typically I'd have my student read one or two "lives" per week, with other primary-source writings and period literature for the rest of the week.

As for benefits -- it's like "Famous Men of Greece/Rome" by someone much closer, chronologically, to those men. It's just good lively history, close to its source.

Thank you, Sally! Do you mind sharing what translation you use beyond the Children's Plutarch?

Again, thank you!

It's actually one I found online -- I make heavy use of free online e-texts for high school. Here's the link. .
