Hi Moms~
I've been perusing Ambleside Online for my 1st and 3rd graders...but I am quite hesitant because I cannot tell if the history has a Protestant bend to it or not?
Do the other literature books have a Protestant bend, too?
I have to be quite careful with our 3rd grader who picks up on EVERYTHING and can take anything in writing as "Gospel Truth".

Maggie, I just saw this question, and I'm sorry it was hanging out there without being answered. On the whole, AO uses classic living books that have stood the test of time. That being said, All books will need to be read with a Catholic's eye, because sometimes a Protestant lean or half truth or even omission will occur. There are some blatantly Protestant titles, like for Year 1-6 Trial and Triumph and later for Years on Saints and Heroes years 7-9. Otherwise the titles are very common.
I really prefer not reinventing the wheel, so I use Mater Amabilis for their approach to history, as it is truly following Charlotte Mason's plan, but making sure there are no Catholic omissions or problems. RC History also has a more Catholic and universal approach, but I have not bought it yet.
I'm excited by the new reprint by Hillside Education, The World's Story by Elizabeth O'Neill. Mater Amabilis now uses it for Level 3 instead of Van Loon. There is a more positive view of Catholic history than the previous book. I'm saving my pennies for this one!!!!!!
I know that's not the years you are planning, but just looking ahead. You will find each program plans history and the cycles a bit different, so this is a good time to plan which approach to take.
We have several threads here of substations of books but staying with the general plan.

The wonderful women who have put AO together are Protestant. But I have never felt uncomfortable with using the material. There are a few books, like Jenn mentioned, and Pilgrims Progress that I steered clear from. But over all just wonderful literature and learning.

Glad Jenn saw your thread and bumped it, Maggie!
Agreeing with Jenn and Betsy on the AO choices. For the most part, I really, really like their choices - they're solid, meaty and classic book choices!! We don't use Pilgrim's Progress, Trial and Triumph. or Saints and Heroes (by George Hodges).
Fantastic literary choices all around though!
And what I love about AO is that they're very solidly CM - so even though I may not use the exact Bible or commentary choices, I can see that CM suggested a commentary for a certain year and I can easily choose a nice Catholic commentary. In other words, it's actually very easy to see the valuable framework those ladies have built and make substitutions.
In Yr. 1 and 3, as Jenn suggested, just substitute a good world history book for Trial and Triumph. I tend not to follow the AO history rotation anyway (though I use their booklist recomendations all the time depending on what period we're reading and studying), so I usually just have my Yr 1 student follow along with the history study of the next oldest child. This year, my Yr 1 and 3 students are studying Ancient History, so we're listening to Story of the World on audio.
