Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son is a 6th grade Seton-enrolled kid. I need some help getting through the History book, Our Catholic Legacy. We read the chapter and do the chapter review at the end of the chapter. But honestly, the chapter review barely reflects the Seton-graded chapter tests. (The parent-graded tests reflect more the chapter review.) Some of the chapters are loaded with so many names of Kings, for example, that even I have trouble keeping it straight!

Any hints for getting through Seton history are appreciated, especially study hints for exams.

My daughter is only in 4th grade, but we have realized the same thing. The chapter reviews are no help when studying for the test. Since I believe that this does not reflect real life (aka college ), we do a couple of different things.

1- provide a mom made study guide
2- have her study the chapters, take the test, retake if necessary
3- an open book test, for the quarterly exam that occurred while I was very sick with morning sickness and forgot to give it to her - the test was given about 3 weeks into the new quarter

My dd was Seton-enrolled for 6th grade last year. Truthfully, I had to spend quite a bit of time with her on history to prepare for the tests.

I would go through the chapter with her and she'd take notes. I'd make sure that she wrote down all the important people, dates, events, etc. And I'd really ham it up--making it come alive as much as possible to help her remember things.

She did all right on it, but she has a pretty good memory and we did take a whole day to study before each test. It's tough, but not impossible.

My son is also enrolled in 6th grade Seton. We read the chapter together and then he does the review. For the test, he usually re-reads the chapter himself and I let him take the test afterwards when it is fresh in his mind, and he has done well. He did figure out the disparity between the mom graded and seton graded tests and hasn't studied as well for mom graded tests which is because of his naturally lazy nature. I liked the way the 5th grade lesson plans went through the chapter and specifically told you what to underline. We would do that while reading the chapter and this helped him to learn how to take notes and also for studying for the tests. You might try looking over the test beforehand and do a similar thing while going through the chapter.

HTH,
Adele
