Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey

I have just finished reading this book, and it strikes me as a great living history book for learning about WWI.

I especially was fascinated with how so many society ladies rallied to the task of setting up hospitals for wounded soldiers. No one asked them to do this, and they used their own money. And Lady Almina did not do it half way... she constantly sought out the best doctors, the best equipment and nurses, the best food, etc. And not to be outdone, her 60 year old mother-in-law was in charge of hospital ships taking wounded soldiers home from Cairo. Go MIL!

The presentation of WWI will stay with me... especially the stories of several individual soldiers. All the major battles are covered, as well as some of what went on before and after the war. You really get a sense of how horrible and massive it all was.

It was just a very intriguing and inspiring read all the way around. Much better than a textbook!
