I'm looking for a book that has ideas about how to celebrate American patriotic holidays with a first grader. Our library doesn't have a very appealing selection. Is there anything out there that is useful, pretty, and interesting (not art projects with paper cup and paper plate)?

Eva, I'm not familiar with a book that would cover what you are looking for so am not much help with that. What I have seen are the cutesy craft project books like you describe. This might come closet to having a little of what you are looking for - Little Hands Celebrate America!: Learning about the U.S.A. Through Crafts & Activities - though it is mostly the cutesy stuff. Mostly I've only seen individual holiday books - not a compilation of the major patriotic holidays in one.
There are some great past threads here on various patriotic holidays that have ideas and resources, so that is my type of go-to for ideas over a compilation book.
Memorial Day threads
Veteran's Day threads
Fourth of July threads (or Independence day)
I compiled this thread many years ago which several people added to. It is for US Flag and Patriotic unit study in general - intended it for Memorial Day, Flag Day and the 4th of July. Lots of it could be used for any patriotic holiday. There are games, crafts, art projects, books, songs, recipes, etc.

Thanks Mary, I will look at the links and maybe do a search at the library for individual holidays. I found one book at our college library (where I hadn't checked before)called Celebration: The Story of American Holidays. It seems to be for older children though, say 4th grade and up.
Jodie, yes, that's a good idea, I'll look at some cookbooks at the library. They also have "The American Boy's Handy Book" there.

Actually, it is quite helpful, I just took a closer look. It talks about the holidays and also gives a few crafts and recipes. There are some games, some poems, and a few pretty pictures and drawings. Sometimes there are excerpts from primary sources or references to monuments. It's not cluttered and kept to the point, but also doesn't present too many facts. Quite useful, I would say. It covers Columbus Day, Independence Day, George Washington's Birthday, Abraham Lincoln's Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Martin Luther King Day, New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
