Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

You might want to take a look at 1491 by Charles Mann.

Depending on where your 8th grader is at, I wouldn't necessarily let him loose on the book, but I could definitely see using sections of it. Definitely one to pre-read, but it makes for a fascinating read!!

I'm planning on using the book once my kids start hitting high school age or so.

I just notice he has put out a version for younger readers:Before Columbus: the Americas of 1491 and it looks really good. It is definitely on my wish list.
