Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So it seems I need to tackle Virginia history this year. Grade level 4, but son's reading and comprehension is above 6th grade.

I don't want a textbook or workbook. Looking for living books. Some picture books would be good.

Some of the requirements are geography related, knowing the terrain, rivers, climate. Cultural -- Indian tribes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Looks like we are looking for the same thing, but just different states.

Have you seen the Discover America State by State series? I haven't looked at the one for Virginia yet, but they would be great to break up into a year long state study. I grabbed the one for Florida - "S is for Sunshine", before we moved. I didn't really like it as a straight read aloud, but I think it is great to read a bit at a time and delve into what is introduced on each page.

There are accompanying study guides that you could use as well.

Maybe not what you are looking for, but I really like just visiting historical sites for state history. Virginia history is so rich! Sometimes just being in someplace of historical significance and talking about what it must have been like can be very exciting for us. We live minutes from the James River and I am awed just thinking of the things that happened here, what people thought, and how they managed!

Cassie, which state are you studying?

Jenn, my brain is scrambled after a long day...surely I have read something that could work for you...let's hope I can remember a title or two soon!

No rush. I am posting now while it's on my mind, but I won't be able to follow up until next week!

Hey Jenn I don't know if you saw or not buy ML and I (over at HT) are teaching VA History at the HTH co-op (we are in the second and third sessions).

The O is for Old Dominion is one of the best picture books for sure. I would also check out Chester Comix's books...he has a bunch about VA History. Very cool. Here is his link

Some great chapter books :

Surviving Jamestown
They Young Americans series
The following series has girls as the leads, so I don't know if that will matter to him or not but this author has several titles set around Virginia, this one is at Lake Anna

Also Geraldine Susi has written some great books about the Civil War in Manassas/Gainesville and a bio on Jennie Dean. You can only get her books at the Battlefield's Visitor Center or you can go to the Manassas Museum...call ahead. It is a MUST to read "Looking for Pa". The first chapter can be hard for some, the mom dies (sorry spoiler) but the rest is awesome and is a great great local geography lesson as well! Mrs. Susi lives in HH and even came out to talk to our history class several years ago, very cool.

Oh and two other nonfiction picture book types I really like are:
James Towne: Struggle for Survival
and
1776: A New Look at Revolutionary Williamsburg

I know you don't want a text. However I found one that I really like and use it to keep me on track to be sure I'm hitting the right high points:
textbook

And modern day VA we always hit bios on Wilder, Ashe, Byrd and more.
ML and I do a LOT of field trips...Belle Haven is very cool, look them up. Then the big ones - Jamestown, Wmsburg, trips to Richmond (the VA Historical Society has a museum of their own, very cool), Monticello, Luray, Route 11 Potato Chip factory, etc.

Hope that helps!!!! Please share any finds you uncover!!!!

Okay Blood on the River is the book my ds wanted me to tell you about, not necessarily Surviving Jamestown...although that looks like a sequel.
