We are going to spend a month or two on the middle east and Northern Africa. I would love any recommendations you have for picture books or appropriate chapter books (my oldest is in 1st). Thanks!

Kristin, I just found a beautiful picture book about African animals inspired by the Tawny Eagle's search for food through the Serengeti National park called Flying Eagle by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen. Even though not nothern Africa but more central, it's still very nice representation of wildlife and landscape.

Good, I wasn't sure if you had seen it since you hadn't posted there again.
I don't have a lot for the Middle East. There is more if you include stories specifically about Golden Age of Islam and the Muslim faith as well as famous religious figures and holidays. Not sure if you want to get heavily into that with a 1st grader. I tend to not present a lot on that aspect with really young ones as I think it can be conflicting. They are often presented as good Muslim, bad Christian. Even if it isn't overt there are often tones of that. But if you are interested I'll list a few recs.
There are also some nice picture books which are folk tale of earlier times in that region (Persia, Ottoman, etc.) or even ancient Biblical (Babylonia, Mesopotamia, etc.). And there are even more I haven't read - I admit this is an area I need to sharpen my picture book repertoire. So if you are looking to cover that time frame let me know.
Demi has several covering both famous religious figures and tales - though I generally consider those picture books for older children.
As it is I am assuming you are looking more for depictions of the modern countries/cultures.
Four Feet, Two Sandals - Pakistan, which is considered part of Middle East in some definitions (Karen Williams)

This is another North Africa one:
Muktar and the Camels - Somalia/Kenya (Janet Graber)
The other thing about many of the books covering this area in modern times, is that they are heavily about war, loss, and violence, so need to be aware of that and decide if you want to focus on that. Some that cover it are not too heavy - others really have a lot of heavy emotion come through which I think can be too much for little ones.

There are exactly the things that I am worried about. I am going to discuss the Muslim faith very generally since our next door neighbors are Muslim, but I am not planning on reading any books about that specifically. I want them to be more invested in our faith before delving deeply into world religions.
As far as the violence and sadness, this has been my main problem finding books. I know that kids from that region are dealing with these things which is why it is so prevalent in the picture books, but my kids are very sensitive and I don't really want to go there!
Here are a couple of books that I found:
The Golden Sandal
Ghaddar the Ghoul and Other Palestinian Stories
Zvuvi's Israel
The last book is not a beautiful picture book that I usually like, but it does show the major sights in Israel and I think my kids will enjoy it.
This is a hard region to find books for. My son's best friend is Lebanese, but I couldn't find any really good books that weren't violent. I am hoping that they can help us make a real Lebanese meal though!
