Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, anybody sitting around with nothing to do that would like to help me with a project? ... A Latin project to be exact?

No, please, don't run! It'll be fun ...really!

Here's the scoop - my 13yo dd is enrolled with MODG. We like it. It suits her. It keeps me on the right track. BUUUUUTTTTT, we are behind in Latin. Now, as my consulatant tells me, any Latin is ahead in Latin and I shouldn't fret. But at the same time, my dd really wants me to sign her up for the on line class that MODG provides for Second Form Latin. That means we have to make some progress over the summer so she can be ready for it.

Since we don't school year round (not yet anyway) this is more difficult than it might seem. My kids are used to having their summers free except for reading time. I would also like to do some Latin with my younger kids at the same time, but I don't want wailing and gnashing of teeth since, after all, it IS summer.

So I got to thinking, "what if we made it fun? We have to have the instruction part but maybe we could add in some games. Maybe a bit of competition? I'm trying to think of a way to make it motivating to learn Latin over the summer for both the kids AND myself.

I've just purchased Latin For Children for my younger kids and Lively Latin for my dd. Yes, I need to prepare her for Second Form but I felt she needed some remedial work since she wasn't getting First Form. I'm thinking Lively Latin might provide that. I still have First Form though so I can always go back to that if I have to.

What I'm mostly interested in is some way to make it fun. Even out-doorsy if possible.

These are the games I've though of already (ahem, the first few are borrowed from my 4yo's speech therapist) -

Bowling - Using a kids bowling game. Pins have words on the bottom. Child gets points for any pins he knocks over IF he can tell the meaning of the latin word on the bottom.

Toss Across - Same principle but child gets the X or the O if he can define the word.

Quacking Ducks - Once again a kiddie game. Little ducks go around and child is supposed to pick one and put it on the lily pad with the same color. I'm thinking the lily pads could have parts of speech and the child would need to put the duck with the latin word on the correct part of speech or maybe declension? Something along those lines.

STicky Note Latin Tag - Make sticky notes for the week's latin vocab. The "IT" person tags by tagging a sticky note to the person. The person has to freeze unless they can give the meaning of the Latin word, recite the declension properly, or whatever.

That's all I have so far. Of course there would also have to be instruction and both of these programs come with DVD's thank Heavens.

I just need to work out the logistics and get some other fun ideas.

Any ideas come to mind?

We never do anything quite so organized as you're proposing, Becky, but the kids like to practice their Latin vocabulary in different voices and styles. As they've grown and been introduced to various characters in their reading, they enjoy adopting these different voices and styles to use as we practice Latin vocabulary, declensions and conjugations orally. There is pirate Latin, opera Latin, British accent Latin, Scottish brogue Latin, Miss Piggy Latin and any other voice style they can think of.

We usually practice translations, too, just one or two at a time. At first these have to be pretty straightforward but it doesn't take long before the kids are coming up with translations that they might enjoy using in more creative ways....like saying things in Latin that their Dad doesn't understand.

I keep toying with getting some Latin children's books and just never have made the jump. But maybe a little Latin read aloud time would be an enjoyable way to add in some Latin time this summer. This is a great list for getting started in finding some neat children's books in Latin. This inspires me to take a look at these again! Thanks for the prompt, Becky.

Good luck getting through First Form Latin this summer!

I just found some free latin game downloads at ellen mchenry's site. For some reason I can't link but the address is www.ellenjmchenry.com. Look for downloads at the top of the page and then click on latin on the sidebar. I haven't had time to look at them yet so I don't know if they would be helpful to you or not.

We also just play the basic memory (write latin/english words on index cards and find matches) game and go fish (again put latin/english words on index cards and player asks other player for the match.
