I've just purchased this book and the student notebook, but am struggling to get my head around it all and make it interesting. Has anyone had any experience using this book and any great ideas for capturing dc's interest?

*Can't believe we haven't chatted about this much before now.

I have the book too and also the other book that she recommends using. (World Geography or something like that.) I had a hard time sifting out where to begin to or getting my head around it as well, so it is still sitting on my book shelf. Would be interested in how people have had success with it because I always get it out to try to use it, but never get it off the ground.

We have it and use it.

We just started the beginning and went forward from there. I would select "required activities" and my son would look over the others and see if he wanted to do anything else. If my "requirements" were few in number, I would require that he choose a minimum number.

He still has his notebook (binder) he made from it and is starting to ask to go through it again in the near future, to do different activities and add to his notebook.

We did all the 3D maps out of playdough or non-drying clay, so we didn't have a bunch of maps around afterward.

I just posted a bit on this over at another thread, although that was really a reference to Trail Guide to US Geography. I have both of the books (US and World) and have used them intermittently in the past. If I remember correctly (I don't have these books here at this house), they had different trails for different levels of students, each trail essentially consisting of questions requiring research to answer as well as map work. If that's not right, then ignore the rest of this post!!

If I looked at the Trail Guides as a resource for supplemental geography and research work, I felt happier with the program. It is a completely different approach than a living books approach. So, we never did do the Trail Guide program as a stand-alone type of program. Rather, I would pick and choose some of the activities to supplement whatever geographical region we were reading about in a living book. Does that make sense? I used it more as a resource/reference guide than as a curriculum in and of itself.

That being said, it's been sitting on my shelf for years and I rarely use it, even though every year I take it out and think I will. That says something....

The lightbulb has gone on! Thank you, I was really struggling with this book and now I realise why I couldn't get it. The mapping questions are excellent, really indepth, and I broke down in a moment of madness and purchased the notebook which complements the main book. My ds12 doesn't mind it but then he gobbles up knowledge in any form. But my dd10 who is a complete living book learner now says she hates geography.

So thinking I will use it as a mapwork resource and forget the rest. Now how to fit it all in
