Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

George Washington's Socks

I found this title mentioned in an old thread about George Washington.
My library had it on tape, and so we listened it. It was very good.
The reviews on Amazon had me wondering what to expect... was it going to be twaddly? (The boys in the story form an Adventure Club and go back in time by accident in an old rowboat). However, if you have ever wanted to feel like you crossed the Delaware with Washington, this is the book for you.

What intrigued me most about this book was how the author treated the whole subject of war. She shows that it is not just good guys vs bad guys. Her characters are very human, and she touches on all the terrible details
war brings. The details are simply written, almost factual, yet they are hard to forget.

I would say that this book is probably better for the upper elementary crowd because some of the details are hard to read (ex. one soldier has a foot wound with gangrene. He just says that the wound has gone numb, and he is thankful that the terrible pain is gone. The author never says gangrene, but you can figure it out).

The book is not gruesome or scary, just detailed. For my crew it was a very living book. I think it was a good read for my ds, who loves his nerf guns and tends to forget that guns are weapons and can kill people.
Also, I know we will never forget about the Hessian soldiers who fought for King George. This book made them very real for us.

This would be a good book to read while studying about the crossing of the Delaware. My favorite part was at the end, when a soldier spits and nearly hits Washington's boot. He apologies profusely to the General.
Washington turns to him and waves him off, saying, "It is of little consequence."

What a great attitude for me to keep in mind... little irritations are of little consequence.
