Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are starting a study of Ancient History (we being myself and 3 dd's ages 11, 10 and 8). I'm looking at Sonlight's ancient history lit. suggestions and it seems like A LOT of books and that they are read quite quickly. I would like someone to tell me that they try to cram too much in and that it's ok not to read all those great books and for my girls to really read, narrate and retain what they have learned from fewer books instead of just trying to "get through" the booklist.

Of course, if it's a reasonable amount of reading please tell me!

Jennifer~
I tend to use Sonlight's history suggestions for my voracious readers to complement our slower-read-history books.

I tend toward less books, read slowly and narrated. Also these slower-read-narrated-books tend to be more challenging books.

Then the Sonlight books are "strewn" and suggested. I may make a couple "required"....but usually once they start them, they can't put them down....they are usually SO GOOD! But, they are reading them for their pleasure, not for narration.

That is, indeed, one of the characteristics of Sonlight....books are read much more quickly. I LOVE their book suggestions!!!! But, I use them differently....

Suzanne, where do you find their suggestions? Listed in the catalog?

here for example.

Homeschool Packages ---> Core Packages ---> click on grade/age level ---> View Core for Level X ---> click on the "included items" TAB

And, it will name the individual items.

I do have their catalogue too.

Their new web-format is not as nice as the old one...well, for those of us who want to use it for book ideas!

Suzanne, when you supplement these extra reading, do you still narrate, but in a shorter fashion?

Yes. These would be more of the "conversational narration" for us. They are fun, exciting stories that everyone likes to talk about, naturally....and casually. Or if they are reading it by themselves, we may chit-chat about them, if I'm reading it too (or have pre-read it). Or it's just a book that is simply "devoured" and not talked about at all!
