I would really like to formulate a 3-year history cycle. I would go from Ancient to the Fall of Rome, Dark Ages through Renaissance and then a year of US history. We school year round so they would get a full year of that time period. Literature, geography, history and science (when possible) books would all be about that time in history. I have All Through the Ages which seems to do a really good job of breaking down time periods and books for various grade levels.

Does this seem like trying to cram too much into a year for convenience sake? My reason for wanting a 3-year cycle rather than 4 or 6 is that my kids are all 3 years apart so it would be nice when they enter 1st grade to start at the beginning of the cycle. Right now I have one in 3rd and K plus a 3yo and then a baby.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

The more you try to put into a time frame the more of an overview it will have to be.. but you'll also cycle through faster.. meaning you might get to things more frequently and add depth that way.

But you might want to look further into the future. High School will be 4 yrs and you'll doubled up on one era in high school. I'm pretty sure that's why many do a 4 yr cycle so that you have 4 yrs of high school history.

It doesn't have to be 4 years of "history" in high school. There are precious few public schools that have students on a 4-year track for "history". I'm sure most of us can remember taking some combination of economics and government during senior year.

So, one could still do a 3-year chronological rotation in history for high school, then do a similar 4th year of economics, government, current events, etc. Whatever you do will likely be light years ahead of what the public schools are doing for history. My son's choices for high school history classes are just dreadful!

I think I will try the 3 year cycle and just see how it works out. Even if I switch it up for high school, all the kids but my oldest will have gone through the cycle 3 times. Right now we are listening to TCOO and will do a unit study on Abraham Lincoln before we visit his childhood home in Indiana and then do a separate trip to Springfield later this summer.

Kelly, NotebookingPages.com just sent out an email about a site called EPI KARDIA. I've been just browsing and noticed that they have a very short rotation of history. I think it's a two year cycle. Here is a link. It might give you some reference

We use the Classical Conversations text and can't say enough about it. It is a 3-year-cycle. And, it covers everything in just 24 weeks per year, so you can supplement extra topics or dive deeper into any favorite topics during your "off" weeks - it's extremely flexible. The cycles are intended to be repeated, the second time through at a deeper level. They are also designed so that a child can "begin" with any of the 3 cycles. I always get library books (or purchase books) to supplement each history and science topic. There are tiny protestant components that are easily corrected.
