Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a good book about the tropics/countries of the tropics for my 11 yo dd. She is a strong reader and right now she is doing these tropical birds notebooking pages. Birds are a great love of hers and she knows a lot about them, but geography is not her strong point. That's why we're making it an area of focus this year.

I just got Spelling Wisdom, book 3, and there are a few excerpts from the book Wonders of the Tropics. This isn't the sort of book I'd give her to read ALL of, but possibly there are some excerpts here to use. (She did the Spelling Wisdom excerpt about flamingos today, and I notice there is more about birds in the table of contents.)

I'd really prefer to find a book that covers tropical regions as a whole, but a book about New Guinea might be second best... for whatever reason, she has always had a great interest in New Guinea for its birds of paradise.

It's not exactly about the tropics, but since so many Central and northern South American countries are in the tropics I would recommend this book - Stories from the Americas (by Frank Henius). It's a book I found when I was working with Cay on the Author Fiesta for Leo Politi. He illustrated this book so the illustrations are great. It is a collection of short stories from Central and South American countries - one for each country. The book is oop but worth finding if you can get from library, etc.

42% of Australia is considered to be tropical (just went on a rabbit trail ) therefore I can recommend some Australian bird books. Our very, very favourite living books are written by Leslie Rees, they are OOP but you can still obtain some.
Also some lovely Australian nature freebies are here including Spotty the Bowerbird. If you are after reference books you can't go past Steve Parish, incredible photography and amazing knowledge.

I did think Swiss Family Robinson a fun read and appropriate.
