Good morning folks!
I just got a cool pdf of a unit study for Constitution Day, celebrated on 9/17 (a Friday this year). Living Books is a Christian CM-style publisher who has put together a great little unit with picture study, copy work and even some poems to work on. One of the copywork examples made me wince in light of how large our government has grown:
Quote:
The Constitution is not neutral. It was designed to take the government off the backs of people. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas

Here's the link to the unit: Constitution Day Helper ... enjoy! For those in Virginia .... Montpelier is free that day and they'll have Jefferson and Madison debating the finer points of the Constitution's wording ....

We just went to Montpelier a few weekends ago. It's been quite a few years, and I hadn't seen the new Vistor center and museums. The house is totally redone, and they were in the process of starting to wallpaper and refurnish it, so it will be very nice when you go Constitution Day!
What we really liked about our visit was that the tour highlighted Madison the person, not just the historical accuracy of the house (even though it is). Some tours don't seem to do that.

Mary, thanks for the links. We're studying this period in history right now. What a great resource!

A few books we are doing this week, also:
We the People: The Story of Our Constitution by Lynne Cheney
We, the People by Peter Spier
Shh! We're Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz
And The Schoolhouse Rock song about this.
Thanks, Mary! I really like the copywork ideas.

Here is another piece of copywork and I can only think:
"So, there is the catch!"
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
~John Adams

So, how did y'all spend Constitution Day? AND we got to see Ruth Tucker (if only for a New York-minute!).....
Oh, and here's another copywork gem from Ben Franklin:
Quote:
The U.S. Constitution doesn't guarantee happiness, only the pursuit of it. You have to catch up with it yourself.
