Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We've fallen in love with Canada after spending several vacations in the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Sadly, there are few Canadian history resources (or living books) available to us here in the mid-Atlantic USA.

If you are Canadian or are a budding Canadianist, please share your history resources for middle schoolers, high schoolers and adults. I'm interested in nonfiction and in literature.

Many thanks!

P.S. I own all the Anne of Green Gables books and had a lovely time visiting Green Gables House, Lover's Lane and the Lake of Shining Waters this summer. PEI is just lovely!

This might be mostly younger grade suggestions - but I think there are middle school resources in this old thread.
Canadians, history & geo

Then there was this one - Canadian history

I recently reread Mrs. Mike (which I had to read in 8th grade). Good read for western Canadian history and the "Mounties"- though really not for jr. high age in my opinion now as an adult.

Then there is Willa Cather's Shadow on the Rock which I haven't read yet, but it's on dd 9th grade MODG list. I've been wanting to read it and will probably join her.

A Partial list for Canadian studies

A useful website for Canadian studies Library and Archives Canada

Music
Michael Mitchell's Canada is for Kids series which can be found at http://www.songsforteaching.com/index.html

Art
Meet the Group of Seven by David Wistow and Kelly McKinley (very good)

William Kurelek's books

NFB (National Film board) material National Film Board of Canada
These need to be previewed as not all material is suitable for children but there are some very good short films here.

Geography

Wow Canada!: Exploring this land from Coast to Coast My children have all enjoyed this book about a trip across Canada.

Sleeping Bear press has alphabet books for Canada and each of it's provinces (plus a Mounties books).

This is a lovely photojourney through Canada

History and Culture

The Spirit of Canada: Canada's Story in Legends, Fiction, Poems, and Songs

Canada's Story volume one and two by Robert Foley. This is an incomplete series for adults but I quite enjoyed the two books that were written.

Unfortunately my main spines for studying Canadian history are all out of print (Canadian history texts for younger readers don't tend to stay in print for long)

However one useful book can be found online Great Canadian Lives

This book does provide an overview although I'm not fond of the style Kids book of Canadian History

Saint books and Shrines

Jesuit Martyrs http://www.martyrs-shrine.com/ (St. Isaac and the Indians-Vision book)

Blessed Marie of the Incarnation (Blessed Marie of New France -Windeatt)

Blessed Andre Bessette Saint Joseph's Oratory who is to be Canonized this fall on Oct 17th!

The Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

Our Lady of the Cape

I've run out of time so I'll just note that Mongomery wrote more than the Anne books and that Stephen Leacock's stories are great fun.

Not history, but Gary Paulsen's Hatchett books are set in Canada.
