Linda's recent blog post of Australian History movies interested me.
I've re-posted her list here (with her permission) and would love you to join in and add more.
Note that some movies are M rated.
The Little Convict (with Rolf Harris - set approx 1800)
Against the Wind (mini-series - 13 episodes) (approx 1800)
Ned Kelly (Starring Heath Ledger -1880)
Seven Little Australians (mini-series - 10 episodes, approx 1880s)
The Man from Snowy River (1888)
The Man from Snowy River 2 (approx 1889)
All the Rivers Run (mini-series-4 episodes ,1890 - )
I Can Jump Puddles (early 1900s) - I recommend the 1st disc only in this 3-disc series.
The Anzacs (mini-series-5 episodes, 1914-1918)
Gallipoli (Starring Mel Gibson, 1914)
The Lighthorsemen (1917)
Phar Lap (-1932)
Storm Boy (1977)
Crocodile Dundee (1986)
* Breaker Morant, Inappropriate behaviour, pre-screen
Adding:
Fatty Finn (1930s)
Picnic at Hanging Rock
I recommend pre-watching this as I remember it a bit scary at the end, it's been years since I saw this.

Pam,
Rabbit Proof Fence was soo thought provoking, a couple of scenes I wouldn't let dd watch when younger but she'd be ready for now. I haven't heard of Lousy Little Sixpence.
Adding:
We of the Never Never
SmileyActually there are a few Smiley movies.

I LOVED the Five Mile Creek Movies growing up, and I recently got the first dvd of them again since I couldn't really remember them. They are really a lot of fun (though, I can't speak for how the series turned as it progressed, yk? I haven't seen them recently). I think it was actually co produced by Disney and some Australian company.
I recently saw My Brilliant Career which is set in historic Australia and apparently based on a popular Australian novel. Its relatively clean, but I HATED the ending.
And, of course, one of our family's favorite movies is The Dish which we actually helped host a movie party last year at dh's work for the 50th anniversary of the moonwalk. It has some language, but frankly, as an American, I find that language spoke with a British or Australian accent slips by more easily, but I'd hate for anyone to be offended by following my recommendation! It is SUCH a fun movie to us (I just die laughing every time the woman who owns the bar talks about that (implied nutty) American asking for pretzels.

I assumed it was because they were rural or it was regional somehow, like when Americans try to make movies about Southerners and everyone sounds like a complete redneck. *Some* Southerners sound like that, especially those who are a bit more isolated, but for most, it is much more subtle.
I also thought they were Australian actors since I didn't know them and Sam Neil is Australian. Is that not the case?
I should also add that the movie sort of stretches things a bit for dramatic (and comedic) purposes, but there is a lot of info out there which corrects the errors, and we enjoyed looking the stuff up later.

G'day! Thanks for posting that, Erin.
Someone recommended to me the mini series '1915' since I posted that list - I wish that they hadn't. I bought it, and watched it - it's supposed to be about the war, and I guess it is, but it seems to be more about who is jumping in to bed with who. Just a shocking story line, and no real climax or resolution, either.
I have to ask about Smiley? A few people have mentioned it, and I have no idea what that is!
I hadn't heard of Five Mile Creek, either - I'll need to check that one out.
I'm definitely looking for movies or mini-series that the entire family can watch; certainly not 1915, I'll be passing that one on, or maybe sending it the same way I sent that 'Alexander the Great' movie - to the bin.
With that, I'm off to check out some of the suggestions - thankyou!

Linda
We have a couple of Smiley movies. I think Smiley and Smiley Gets a Gun. Filmed in the 1950s, Smiley is a true bush kid always getting up to mischief, but not intentionally, he just doesn't think. There are some themes, Smiley's dad is an alcoholic and the publican is dealing in drugs in one episode, but I think a large part of it goes over the kids heads. Basically a bush larrikan.
Adding;
The Shiralee
Robbery Under Arms (Suspect adult film, haven't watched)

Well, Duh! Here I am, back from holidays, and I forgot to ask you about the Smiley movies while I was at your place!
I have, however, found a 2nd hand copy of the 'River Kings' mini series, so I shall be watching that - um - hopefully soon! We're busy preparing for the local show, with our usual zillion art & craft entries.....
It was so great meeting you face to face, Erin - thanks so much for having us. Did you put up the photo here anywhere?

I didn't see Rabbit Proof Fence on the list. Maybe the topic is controversial, but we really enjoyed the film. ( I would imagine that it would be like Americans trying to explain slavery, civil rights, internment camps) Very inspiring story though.
The other we recently got to view was Australia. Also enjoyed it. Again, don't know enough Australian history to know if these are accurate or just very "hollywoodnized".
Couldn't explain why, but Quigly Down Under is one of my dh favorites. My dd knows the music to this film by heart

Quigley Down Under is fun!
I kind-of liked 'Australia', but I have this slight problem in that I really like Hugh Jackman, and really dislike Nicole Kidman (as actors, I mean). Still, the movie was OK, and certainly funny in parts. I don't think it was the epic that it was promoted to be, however.
I also don't think there was any need at all for one 'certain' scence - but all modern movies seem to insist on those scenes these days, sadly.
Anyways, must rush - just realised the children have dentist appointments, and we need to leave in 20 minutes - arghhhhh!
God bless,

If only The Castle had some historical content it could be added to this list.

Feel free to start another Australian list, would Castle be 'culture'?

OH, dear - I haven't even SEEN The Castle. I must remedy that - so many people talk about it! I'll catch up... eventually.
