Please? I'm planning on starting Ancient History next year, and I think I'd like a CD for a spine back up plan. But... I think there's quite a few?
Has anyone used any of these (or others?) in particular for Ancient History. I'm looking for any feedback.

I just requested SOTW from the library to preview it. I didn't realize Gombrich was on CD, too. Both of those I was trying to decide to use this year.
Looking forward to hearing feedback. I know Melinda (SeaStar) really loved SOTW.

We have Gombrich's CD.
My older children laugh at his little personal asides. Because it is all one CD it is not as indepth as I assume SOTW would be. He is covering alot on one disc. It is still rather meaty though. I find his voice not as easy to listen to as Jim Weiss (we have his Shakespeare CD). But it fit in our budget alot better, you've now reminded me we should finish listening to it.

I haven't heard the cd, but I read the book thinking I would get the cd to use with history this year. I liked the text, but I can't compare it to SOTW except to assume it is obviously less detailed.
I wanted something to use alongside First Timeline, so since I plan on doing the whole thing in one year and its only the first grade, the Gombrich seemed a better choice (that and the cost).
However, my boys will listen to Jim Weiss all day long, so I have considered getting it just to let them listen to on their own and not think of it as school. Maybe put it in the van and/or on their mp3 player for fun.

I just got SOTW-Vol. 1 on audio from the library the other day to preview it. My library doesn't have the other two. We liked listening to parts of SOTW-Vol. 2 this year with our Medieval period.
Maryan---Did you see this thread? How do you use SOTW?
I like that there are a couple different places to go (links) to help find other picture books and read alouds to where we'd be at with SOTW. I am completely ignorant of Ancient History and I need a bit more direction than with other time periods.
Looking forward to hearing any other feedback on the other 2 Maryan linked.

We really like SOTW Volume I for backing up Ancient Studies! And the fact that it's read by Jim Weiss gets  here!!!
I also used and the kids really enjoyed:
** Jewish Holiday Stories (Jim Weiss/Greathall Productions)
** Tales from the Old Testament (Jim Weiss/Greathall Productions)
** Egytptian
The following is geared more towards high school, but my dd is listening to it this year:
** How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization (book by Thomas Woods, read by Barrett Whitener)

Thanks, Jen, for the reminder about his other cds. I had planned on using Tales from the Old Testament, but I didn't even think about adding on those other two. I seems like common sense to look into those, but sometimes I think that these types of discussions exist merely to state the obvious for me, lol.

I've listened to SOTW and Gombrich and I have to say I prefer Gombrich.
I like Jim Weiss's voice and all, but the narrator on Gombrich has a wonderful voice, too. But it isn't the voice, but the quality of writing to me that makes all the difference. It really is beautifully written, head and shoulders above SOTW if you ask me. I really enjoy listening to it.
I am going to use Gombrich this year with my dd. It is certainly less detailed than SOTW because it is just 8 CDs covering all of history. But a broad overview is what I want for her this year before we go back next year and begin to do each time period in more depth. Gombrich fills the bill for this purpose just perfectly.

So, in looking back over the Jim Weiss I want to add to our collection, I recall that one of the few problematic cds I've heard mentioned was "Galileo and the Stargazers."
Does anyone have this cd? Is it only one of the tracks that speaks unfavorably/inaccurately about the Church (I'm guessing the track "The Trial of Galileo") or is it a theme. If its just one track, I plan to put it on an mp3 player anyway and could just skip it. Thoughts?

Audible.com has an audio sample of Gombrich, so you can get a sample of the narrator's voice as well as the content. I like his voice as well as or even better than Jim Weiss...

There are two narrators, Ralph Cosham, and Philip Madoc.

Yes, and Greathall Productions has some lists that group by eras and also a timeline for the recordinging/

I doubt it as The Story of Art would lose much of it's value without the illustrations (400+ as of the latest edition).
