Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone have any excellent resources to recommend for a short study of Nelson Mandela and his role in ending Apartheid?
This would be for my 14yo son who asked about him. Ideally I'd like to find an engaging YA level living book or an excellent documentary. I know about the books Kafir Boy and Cry the Beloved Country, which I will get for him to read as background on Apartheid, but they don't address Mandela, do they? I can't remember for sure as it has been awhile since I read them.

Thanks.

I read Cry the Beloved Country last year when ds15 was doing SL's 20th century history study. I'd never read it before and was profoundly touched. No, it doesn't mention Mandela at all that I remember; I'm pretty sure everything in the book takes place before he came into the limelight.

Sorry I can't help with another book, though.

Has anyone seen Invictus yet? I have no idea if it would be appropriate for your son, but I am looking forward to it when it comes out on dvd. It's sounds very interesting. It covers this time period and Mandela.

If you want a picture book to include your dd in the study too, there is this one Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. It's taken from his autobiography but obvously much shorter and also simpler language to be a picture book. But it is pretty substantial for a picture book - lots of information.

How about the movie "Cry Freedom." It's set in the 1970s and is about the activist Steve Beko. Very moving.

Also if you have any ex-pat South African's in your town how about you seek them out and have a chat. There's nothing like a primary source in your lounge room. Make sure you serve them a cup of Rooibos tea!

We have friends who moved here to Australia about 6 years ago. I never tire of hearing their stories.

btw, ds is about halfway through Cry the Beloved Country and is enjoying it so far (Yay!!). The writing in that book is just so gorgeous.
