Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm considering using Vol I of RC History next year. I can't tell which Jeff Cavins set is used. The curriculum say you can choose one or two they mention. Can someone who has used this give me a little help? Thanks so much.

Martha

Well, I purchsed this volume a few years back, and I remember the background resources suggested were The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible (Cavins) and Salvation History audio set (Hahn). I wound up not using the Cavins stuff at all for a few reasons. The main reason was the price. The secondary reason was it is really more background info for you as the teacher. From looking at the St. George bookstore website (which is where the RC HIstory links take you), it looks like those materials are no longer suggested??? Is this where your confusion lies?

If you have older students (high school age), the Cavins material might be useful. Volume 1 of Connecting With History (CWH) follows the Great Bible Adventure timeline, which essentially follows the timeline of when the various books of the Bible were written in history and not necessarily how they are presented in the Bible. Personally, I got the general gist of the flow by listening to Our Father's Plan by Scott Hahn and Jeff Cavins. I'm guessing this is similar to The Great Adventure and Salvation History, as it was a series which was initially on EWTN some time ago.

Another possible option is to see if these resources are available through your parish library. Then, you might only need or want to spring for a timeline and/or a study guide.

BTW, while this uses a multi-level approach similar to TOG, it is definitely a much lighter way of going about the study of history and literature. I like that you don't have to tinker much with it because it's already using Catholic materials.

Martha,
I've used (or adapted) pieces of RC History Vol I for a couple of cycles now (first with my dd when she was in the 4th grade, and again this past year with my son who's in the 4th grade and my dd again now in the 8th grade). I used the very oldest version of the Jeff Cavins Bible Timeline program (I think it was the first edition he ever published) because my mom had it and I could borrow it (it's old enough that it is a VHS tape ). This was before there were various programs - there was just one, with a timeline that you worked your way through as you listen to the tape. I adapted this on my own very easily to use with my younger children. I **hope** I still have the timelines that my mom and I made that were adapted for the younger children on my old computer. If I do, I'll upload the files here for you after Easter (unfortunately, the old computer is in my room and the little one is in there and asleep). Let's hope I can find them!!!

Are you wondering if you need the children's version, teen version, or adult version of the Jeff Cavins Great Adventure Bible Timeline?? What ages will you be using this with?

Total aside...but if you go with this program next year, Steve Ray's Footprints of God series is absolutely EXCELLENT for accompanying many of the units!!
