Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're studying World War II and I'd really like to show my older girls (ages 14 and 12) a movie that would communicate the realities of that war yet not too harshly. Does that make sense? I don't want anything too gory yet I don't want it lighthearted either. Can anyone recommend something that would fit those parameters?

Thank you so much.

My favorite at that age was The Longest Day. Very historically accurate but not gory at all.

Another good one is Sink the Bismark.

This happens to be a favorite genre of mine. My husband actually started to "like" me after our first one on one conversation at a conference which involved discussing our favorite old WWII movies. He always jokes "You had me at 'M16 assault rifle'" though, I'm quite certain I never uttered that phrase;) I'll try to think of a few more later today!

I second "The Longest Day." My 11yods has loved that movie for a few years, now. Also, he likes "Tora, Tora, Tora," which isn't too bad as far as graphic violence is concerned, either. "Stalag 17" is one of our over-all favorite movies. "Mrs. Miniver" is set in England, and is very good, not gory at all, has a very sad part, but then shows everyone in church (Anglican,) so shows that faith can help in times of trouble. I really, really like that movie.
A movie that talks about the homefront is "Since You Went Away," about a wife whose dh leaves for the service, the border they take in, her going to work in a factory, her daughters' efforts to help with the war effort. I really like this one, too!

God Bless,

We just watched "Silent Night" with Linda Hamilton. It is based on a true story. Three American soldiers stumble upon a cabin belonging to a German woman and her son. She takes them in for Christmas Eve if they promise to leave their guns outside. Then some German soldiers lost in the snow come by and she offers them the same deal. So enemies spend a tense yet beautiful Christmas Eve together. It was a great movie!

Oh there is one that I really like but I can't remember the name of, it stars Sam Waterston and is based on the trues story of a Danish doctor who smuggled something like 7000 Jews out of Denmark. Sorry to be so vague...

The Scarlet and the Black is a very good movie! I can't remember it well enough to recall age appropriateness though.

We just watched this last week. It would be spot on for your kiddos.
