I'm sorry to re-hash the 20th century history things agian, but my 9 year old son has asked to study World War II and Vietnam (because his Dad was in the service at that time.) I have done a search here and most of what I have found is for older children. Any help for books or guidance would be appreciated.
Thank you!

can you do a search through your library website?
One I found that is appealing to my 9 year old son is
"You Wouldn't Want to be a WWII pilot" (it's a series).
God bless,

My favorite WWII living books for younger readers:
Number the Stars (top choice!)
Snow Treasure
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
Farewell to Manzanar (more challenging)
Dear Miss Breed (also challenging, but very good!)
Vietnam is much more difficult. I haven't found anything suitable for the 9 - 10 y.o. age group. I hope someone else has.

Kristen we studied WW2 in depth when I had children aged 10, 8 and 3. They all loved the books and movies we watched. I think. I am sure I posted my unit study on the forums - but cannot find it through searching. I would be happy to email you my Word document if you pm me your email.

Marilyn, I think you only posted links to your blog. I found that in this thread. But as a private blog now, can't be viewed. It would be great if you could post the actual unit here somewhere Marilyn. In your spare time .
Another recommendation:
World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities It's one of the For Kids Series books of activities for different time periods. I find these to be very informative and offers some good hands-on ways to study a particular time in history.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
Marilyn, I PMed you, thanks!
After searching and then posting this, it occured to me to get some ideas from "A Picture Perfect Childhood." I also searched my shelves, which didn't have too much, but I did find World War II for Kids.
God bless,

Oh, another old WWII thread - specifically with picture book suggestions.
WWII picture books
And an activity that is good for this age and this time period is oral histories. Have him interview veterans from those wars. The WWII generation is dying at a very fast rate but there are still veterans around. Check with the local VFW post for contacts/references if you don't know anyone. He already has an interviewee in his father for the Vietnam War - though finding others to compare experiences would be interesting.
This is a series by a local woman here - Home Front Heroes. These books are about boys and girls during WWII. Very interesting perspective of studying the events and emotions of the war. She has lesson plans and ideas on her web site as well as the real histories behind the children portrayed in her books.

Winged Watchman is our all time favorite family read aloud and is a WWII book. My godfather who was the same age as the main character in the story during WWII ( and was Dutch) borrowed the book out of curiousity and said it was very real to life.
Also, I'd definitely take a visit to the Veterans Memorial Museum. If you are lucky, the tour guide will be a WWII veteran. Our tour we got a presentation in the flight room done by a WWII navigator who had flown the very mission they were using as an example.
I have lots of books - come by and peruse if you'd like. We have some on Iwo and I may even have some stuff to dig up about the Battle in the Pacific. These are easier read histories (I still think they fall in the living books category but it not literature).
