Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need some books that are overviews of a country. I need several countries, so they need to be relatively inexpensive, and for the age group upper elementary. We have lots of Usborne type atlases and people/places type books but I need books that are a little more in depth but still living, colorful and interesting. I'm hesitant to buy from Amazon without a recommendation because I'm afraid of politically correct garbage about a country's religious underpinnings. I once bought a beautiful used book about Poland only to discover some really nasty remarks about Poland's Catholic heritage.

I've been looking at series like this and this or this.

Could you recommend any of these series or something like it?

We have found the "Countries of the World Series" to be very well done. We borrow these from the library.

Oh, yes, I like the Look What Came From series.

This is a very good question, ~Books, because these types of country series books are pretty notorius for a PC or anti-faith attitude. I'm not recalling the names of the books I've seen recently. I'll have to go check at the library.

It looks as if there are two Countries of the World series.

The National Geographic Countries of the World series (which amazon states is for ages 9-12) and the Capstone press Countries of the world series (which amazon states is for ages 4-8).

I've seen one of the National Geographic series and I found it to be a reasonably decent book.

An interesting series if you can find them in a library are the How to Draw {insert Country or state name here} Sights and Symbols ]books. They are not inexpensive and so I wouldn't consider them worth buying outright but the focus on drawing would be of interest to an artistic child and they do contain basic geographic knowledge.

The Look What Came From series looks perfect for my 10 yr old. She's doing travel brochures from CHC's Tour a Country.

Thank you for noticing that there are two different series with the same titles. I hadn't seen the Ntl. Geographic ones at all.

I'm morphing my older dd's SL core 5 into Serendipity's cultures and countries. We already have the Child's Geography, so I'm looking for something a bit more history/people/cultures based for her. Serendipity has information for India, the Middle East and Africa, which is so perfect because that's all we have left of our studies! So anyway, that's what I'm looking for.

Maybe I need to go to the library and just get a look at some of these first. Sigh...the library is not close and its hard to get there with the littlies...

I've found that the best way for me to use the library has been to make heavy use of the library's online catalog and hold service and to subscribe to this webservice library elf.

I simply put the books I want on hold a few days before I go to the library (our library will keep the books on hold for up to a week before cancelling the hold).

Then when I visit I can return books and quickly grab the books I want. [Making it possible to go when daddy's watching the children or running in for five minutes while daddy and the children are in the car ]

I was going to recommend this as well. You may also want to check with your library to see if they do email reminders. I didn't know that ours did until a librarian in the children's department recommended signing up for the service. It had never been brought up by anyone in the circulation service. I also use the online account service to keep track of what's due and to renew materials.
