Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'd like to recommend the movie THE NINTH DAY about a Roman Catholic priest in a Nazi concentration camp with an entire cell block of priests. The movie is based on the priest's journal and is a true story.

This movie would be for very mature teens and above. I am still haunted by a scene of a mock crucifixion.

Victoria,

Thanks for the links. We ordered the film. I think it will really tie in with what we are studying. Besides WWII, Communism and Nazism and those time periods were what initially enticed me to study history in college. I think it was because I could identify with suffering people - and suddenly history was about real people. Maybe this will help our dd (the 18 yo - not any of the others yet as this film is sure to be intense!)as well. History is still her least favorite subject - tied with science. (Or is it just that I want the excuse to watch the film and talk about it with someone?

You wouldn't happen to know the name of a good, relatively accurate film about the rise of communism would you?

Janet,
If you're interested in the rise of communism and the effect on the Catholic church and another priest, you might be interested in the life of Walter Ciszek, S.J. . He was a Eastern Rite priest (whose cause for canonization is being promoted) and was a prisoner in Soviet camps for 23 years. I read one of his books, With God in Russia, and am planning to read his other book, He Leadeth Me. His life and the historical times he lived in are very compelling reading...

Janet, sorry I don't know of a film about the rise of communism. There is a film with Russian history, but it's difficult for teens because it's subtitled and relatively old. The film is Andrei Rublev and charts the life of the great icon painter through a turbulent period of 15th Century Russian history... It was communism in Russia that tried to squash the making of this movie, though.

Jennifer, thanks for the info on Fr. Ciszek. His story looks amazing. Wow, that the will of God is before our noses every day. Excellent.
