Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are about to embark on a study of the Romans... does anyone have some great suggestions for books/guides/studies... anything Roman? We have SOTW, but it really doesn't cover Romans in enough depth... DS loves the Romans

Check out the Dirty Old Coins web site at www.dirtyoldcoins.com. They have a really cool poster that shows all the Roman Emperors, as depicted in the coins they issued during their reign, in chronological order, with dates underneath. It's a little pricey, $15 I think, but it is really nifty. It even has them color coded into categories of Main Emperors, Userpers, Gallic Secessionists, British Secessionists and Easter Emperors.

If your son is really into the Roman thing, you should go visit a coin shop, too. You can actually hold in your hand (and even buy, for very little) some pretty neat coins minted and used during the Roman Empire.

Re: books. Immediately leaping to mind are "Detectives in Togas" by Henry Winterfield, and its sequel, what is it, "The Roman Ransome Mystery" or something like that. My kids loved these books. "The Bronze Bow", another great read, about the Roman occupation of Palestine.

Rachel,
I forgot to mention Greenleaf's "Famous Men of Ancient Rome" Not a living book, but a thorough kid-oriented compendium of info about the leading players of Ancient Rome.

Hi Rachel,

We are in the middle of a Rome study with our coop and I thought I'd mention some of the resources we are finding helpful:

Life in Ancient Rome ~ great coloring book

Ancient Rome Discoveries ~ large pages, really great pictures

Ancient Rome Time Line ~ folds out

Roman action figures ~ my 6yo loves playing with these

Rome Antics ~ also by David Macauley

Classical Kids ~ has some fun crafts

This Roman arch building set might be for older kids (the 10 yos worked on it for about 30 minutes) but my 6 yo enjoyed playing around with it last night

If your library has back issues of the magazine Calliope, there was a recent issue on "Rome's Master Builders" which I found a great help in teaching about architecture and engineering.

This PBS site is geared to grades 4-8 but there are a lot of great links and ideas. And this site let's you build an aqueduct!

Also, I haven't read them myself, but there is a series of books called The Roman Mysteries that looks fun, and our library has copies ...

Hope that helps!

Here is a link to a game called "Construct an Aqueduct."
Construct an Aqueduct
It is part of the very nice NOVA companion site called Secrets of the Lost Empires.

Hi again,

The Today show is going to be in Rome all this week leading up to the Olympics. I know it can be a tricky show to watch with kids but it might be worth previewing (taping or "tivo-ing") to see if there's anything you can show your son.

You can check the day-by-day schedule ~ where they'll be and what they'll be discussing ~ here.

We're just finishing--here's what we've liked best

Augustus Ceasar's World--Genevieve Foster. We love all of her books.

Roman Myths--Geraldine McCaughrean (I posted about this in the "Living Books" section, very vivid!!)

My son has used The Oxford First Ancient History book illustrated by Peter Connoly for his "core text" on Rome (+ Greece and others). I have LOVED it, have been so impressed. He really integrates archeological finds, etc. and makes it interesting for kids with "mock interviews" of historical characters, and other things like that. It is British and has a bit of a different tone. I can't say enough about it!

Peter Connoly wrote/illustrated several books on Roman warfare--Legionary, Cavalryman, Roman Fort, others, that I would have LOVED to check out. If only I had a library . . . bet these would be great for your boy!
